Experts Confirm Second Tornado From Tuesday's Storm

??? Preliminary reports from Tuesday's storm included one funnel cloud, one tornado, and severe thunderstorms, but now, a second tornado has been confirmed, thanks to a video sent into Action News from a viewer. The second twister was spotted near Danley Road in Colusa, just after 2pm, Tuesday afternoon. After reviewing the tape, Dan Keeton from the National Weather Service confirmed the event as an EF0 tornado. "Based on the video, and evidence we received from the reports that we saw, we can easily conclude that we had what we refer to as a land spout tornado. Than means it was not associated with any sort of strong thunderstorm activity."

??? Since the tornado was not associated with a thunderstorm, like the twister that touched down in Gerber, it was harder for officials to discover, and confirm. Which is why Keeton says technology is key in confirming these events. "In the olden days you had to rely on ground troops that you set up ahead of time. Now, with social media, it's pretty easy to find things out after they've occurred. Ya know, a video was brought to our attention, we looked at the radar, and could go ahead, and make the call."

??? The next step in confirming a tornado did touch down, would be a damage assessment, but since this twister was in a field, the experts had to go without. "Unless we have tree's or some sort of pattern of debris, or something, there's not much point in actually trying to piece it together. You can't really see anything," according to Keeton.

??? The Colusa twister was officially rated as an EF0 tornado, the weakest of it's kind, but Keeton says, there's really no such thing as a weak tornado. "Had this storm moved over an area, like a house, or a barn, or a field, or any place that's congested with people, it would have produced really significant damage."

NASA deciphering the mysterious math of the solar wind

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Many areas of scientific research -- Earth's weather, ocean currents, the outpouring of magnetic energy from the sun -- require mapping out the large scale features of a complex system and its intricate details simultaneously.

Describing such systems accurately, relies on numerous kinds of input, beginning with observations of the system, incorporating mathematical equations to approximate those observations, running computer simulations to attempt to replicate observations, and cycling back through all the steps to refine and improve the models until they jibe with what's seen. Ultimately, the models successfully help scientists describe, and even predict, how the system works.

Understanding the sun and how the material and energy it sends out affects the solar system is crucial, since it creates a dynamic space weather system that can disrupt human technology in space such as communications and global positioning system (GPS) satellites.

However, the sun and its prodigious stream of solar particles, called the solar wind, can be particularly tricky to model since as the material streams to the outer reaches of the solar system it carries along its own magnetic fields. The magnetic forces add an extra set of laws to incorporate when trying to determine what's governing the movement. Indeed, until now, equations for certain aspects of the solar wind have never been successfully devised to correlate to the observations seen by instruments in space. Now, for the first time, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., has created a set of the necessary equations, published in Physical Review Letters on Dec. 4, 2012.

"Since the 1970s, scientists have known that movement in the solar wind often has the characteristics of a kind of wave called an Alfv?n wave," says Aaron Roberts, a space scientist at Goddard. "Imagine you have a jump rope and you wiggle one end so that it sends waves down the rope. Alfv?n waves are similar, but the moving rope is a magnetic field line itself."

The Alfv?n waves in this case tended to have great consistency in height -- or amplitude, which is the common term when talking about waves -- but they are random in direction. You might think of it like a jump rope twirling, always the same distance from center, but nonetheless able to be in many places in space. Another way scientists have envisioned the waves is as a "random walk on a sphere." Again, always the same distance from a given center, but with a variable placement.

Such metaphorical descriptions are based on what instruments in space have, in fact, observed when they see magnetic waves go by in the solar wind. But it turns out that the equations to describe this kind of movement -- equations necessary to advance scientific models of the entire system -- were not easily found.

"The puzzle has been to figure out why the amplitude is so constant," says Roberts. "But it's been very difficult to find equations that satisfy all the characteristics of the magnetic field."

Similar waves are, in fact, seen in light, known as polarized waves. But magnetic fields have additional constraints on what shapes and configurations are even possible. Roberts found a way to overlap numerous waves of different wavelengths in such a way that they ultimately made the variation in amplitude as small as possible.

To his surprise, the equations Roberts devised matched what was observed more closely than he'd expected. Not only did the equations show waves of constant amplitude, but they also showed occasional random jumps and sharp changes -- an unexplained feature seen in the observations themselves.

"Overlapping the waves in this way gives us a way of writing down equations that we didn't have before," says Roberts. "It also has this nice consequence that it is more realistic than we expected, since it shows discontinuities we actually see in the wind. This is important for simulations and models where we want to start with initial conditions that are as close to the observed solar wind as we can get."

Of course, having an equation doesn't yet tell us the reason why the waves in the solar wind are shaped in this way. Nonetheless, equations that describe how the waves move open the door to increasingly accurate simulations that may well help explain such causes. By alternately improving models and improving observations, scientists continue the cyclic nature of such research, until just what physical action on the sun causes these curiously-shaped Alfv?n waves someday becomes clear.

Tim Tebow To Speak At Anti-Semitic Anti-Gay Pastor?s Dallas Church

By dave-dr-gonzo | SOURCE

This can?t be good for the popular self-identified Christian quarterback?s image:

[T]he Jets? quarterback has forced his way back into the spotlight with an April 28 speaking appearance at a Dallas megachurch known for its anti-gay, anti-Semitic pastor, Robert Jeffress.

Like Tebow, Jeffress knows how to grab the media spotlight; however, the Dallas pastor prefers public condemnations of other religions rather than relatively mundane quarterback controversies to worm his way into earned media appearances.

In 2011, Jeffress said Mormonism and Islam originated in ?the pit of Hell? and also added that Jews were also ticketed for eternal damnation. A friend of Texas governor and former Presidential candidate Rick Perry, he called Mormonism a cult and told an audience that it should disqualify 2012 GOP candidate Mitt Romney from being President.

2012: a BSD year in retrospective

Linked by Julian Djamil Fagir on 02/14/13 22:23 UTC

BSD and Darwin derivativesBSD (Berkely System Distribution) was a research operating system based on the original AT&T Unix, developed by the University of Berkeley, California. It has been Open Source right from the beginning, and after the university lost interest in developing it further, several community projects started up (the very first ones were NetBSD and FreeBSD in the early nineties) to continue developing BSD. Anyway, Linux was born roughly at the same time, but a pending lawsuit about copyright infringements prevented the BSD projects to become as successful as Linux (though you could argue about the exact reasons). ^ 13??Read More ? 61 Comment(s)

Jennifer Hudson, Zeta-Jones to sing in Oscars musical tribute

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar winners Russell Crowe, Jennifer Hudson and Catherine Zeta-Jones will perform at the Academy Awards in a tribute to the resurgence of big-screen musicals, organizers said on Wednesday.

The performance, which will also feature Oscar nominees Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman from "Les Miserables," is part of the several musical acts at the annual Hollywood awards on Sunday.

"We are pleased to have been able to amass so much talent to create the celebration of musicals of the last decade that we envisioned," Oscars producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan said in a statement. "We are thrilled that so many talented actors have agreed to bring our vision to life."

Musicals have had a revival over the past decade in Hollywood. Death row drama "Chicago" won six Academy Awards in 2003, including top prize Best Picture, and girl-group drama "Dreamgirls" scored two Oscars in 2007 while television's "Glee" has won six Emmy awards since 2010.

R&B singer Hudson won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls" and Zeta-Jones won the same award for "Chicago" in 2003.

Crowe, who stars in "Les Mis," won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2001 for his role in the Roman drama "Gladiator."

"Les Mis" scored eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Song. "Les Mis" actors Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit and Samantha Banks will also join the musical tribute.

Singers Adele, Shirley Bassey, Norah Jones and Barbara Streisand will also perform at the awards show.

Adele is nominated for an Oscar for her song "Skyfall" in the James Bond film of the same name, and Jones will perform Oscar-nominated song "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from "Ted."

How to Avoid Getting Spear-Phished by China's Hackers Who Got to Apple & More

The tidal wave of Chinese hack attacks on the U.S. in recent weeks, from? The New York Times and?the Defense Department to Facebook and?now even Apple, have one increasingly common and sophisticated type of malware trick in common: "spear-phishing." The tech giants seem to?be the victim of a site called iPhonedevSdk, while WikiLeaks and a new cyber-espionage report appear to connect hacked Cabinet-level emails with a Chinese army-linked group known as "Comment Crew." But beyond the initial paranoia that we may be on the brink of "an?asymmetrical?digital with China," you'd be forgiven for asking: If tech giants and the government can fall prey to a bad link in an email, why can't I? As some have quipped, targeted spear-phishing emails are "not a terribly sophisticated attack" ? it's advance spam, really ? but just because the more complex spear-phishing schemes make up a fraction of basic phishing scams doesn't mean you and your company can't avoid?embarrassment. Spear-fishing does pay off for hackers 40-to-1, after all. This new round of attacks may be more sophisticated than that, as Facebook has insisted since it unveiled its internal vulnerability?on Friday, but here's a starter guide on how?not?to be that guy, just in case the Chinese hacker war hits your inbox next:

RELATED: Facebook Goes to China: A Test of Zuckerberg's Values

Step 1: Understand the Difference Between Phishing and Spear-Phishing

RELATED: Foxconn Is Still a Hard Place to Work

Phishing attacks are the more blatantly malicious ones ? they come from big organizations sending generic emails from generic addresses to thousands of inboxes, hoping that just some of the malware recipients will click a malicious link or download an infected file. A common phishing scam is a fake version of your bank asking you for your online banking login, but it gets worse than that.?

RELATED: These Samsung Factories Sound as Bad as Foxconn

Spear-phishing, on the other hand, targets a small group of specific users, as ComputerWorld's Gregg Keizer explained in a 2011 post. And instead of coming from a big company or social-media network, these emails come from senders who appear to be colleagues or friends. They also tend to include personalized touches, as security firm Norton explains on its site:

The salutation on the email message is likely to be personalized: "Hi Bob" instead of "Dear Sir." The email may make reference to a "mutual friend." Or to a recent online purchase you've made. Because the email seems to come from someone you know, you may be less vigilant and give them the information they ask for.

Step 2: Check the Sender's Full Email Address ?

RELATED: Foxconn Is Putting on a Good Show

Often spear-phishing emails will look like they come from a trusted friend or colleague, but the name isn't always the thing when it comes to email. In its report?linking the Chinese hacking group known as "Comment Crew" to the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the cyber-security firm Mandiant used this example:

RELATED: Infographics Say It All in Facebook's Latest SEC Filing

?

Kevin Mandia is Mandiant's CEO, which, despite the dubious "details click here" line,?makes this seem like a totally real email ? Mandiant is good at PR, if its coordination with its former clients and soon-to-be partners at The?New York Times?on the China report's reveal is any example.?However, upon closer inspection, that domain ? kevin.mandia@rocketmail.com ? probably doesn't belong to Mandia. Would the CEO of a big major technology watchdog really use Rocketmail?

Step 3: Remember That Hackers Can Email Back, Too

So one obvious way to test a shady email from a shady person would be ... to respond. Turns out, that's not a foolproof tactic for checking the viability of a sensitive message. The Mandiant cybersleuths actually wrote back to one of the Chinese hackers they were in the process of outing: "I'm not sure?if this is legit, so I didn't open it." Within 20?minutes, someone responded back: "It's legit." Just because it sounds like your friend doesn't ever mean that it is. A better way to double-check would be to contact the "friend" in a separate email, via phone, or by any other means.?

Step 4: Check the Attachment File Type Closely

Most spear-phishing files come in .zip format, according to the Mandiant report. But, often these hackers dress up Zip files as PDFs in disguise, like this:

While that looks like a standard .pdf file, Adobe icon and all, that little elipses is revealing. The file name continues after the PDF extension to include 119 spaces folowed by .exe, according to the Mandiant report.?

Step 5: Check for Vague Filenames

While spear-phishing emails have an incredible amount of personalization, the files go for a more generic string of words. Something like "updated_office_contact_v1.zip" is common. The file names also tend to include military, economic, and diplomatic themes, largely because of the types of organizations these hackers attack.?

Step 6: Be Paranoid

This one comes from security researchers at Georgia Tech: "It's very difficult to put technical controls into place to prevent humans from making a mistake. To keep these attacks out, email users have to do the right thing every single time," writes malware expert?Andrew Howard. "Users are the front line defense. We need every user to have a little paranoia about email."?

NASA's Kepler mission discovers tiny planet system: Smallest planet yet found around a star similar to our sun

Feb. 20, 2013 ? NASA's Kepler mission scientists have discovered a new planetary system that is home to the smallest planet yet found around a star similar to our sun.

The planets are located in a system called Kepler-37, about 210 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The smallest planet, Kepler-37b, is slightly larger than our moon, measuring about one-third the size of Earth. It is smaller than Mercury, which made its detection a challenge.

The moon-size planet and its two companion planets were found by scientists with NASA's Kepler mission, which is designed to find Earth-sized planets in or near the "habitable zone," the region in a planetary system where liquid water might exist on the surface of an orbiting planet. However, while the star in Kepler-37 may be similar to our sun, the system appears quite unlike the solar system in which we live.

Astronomers think Kepler-37b does not have an atmosphere and cannot support life as we know it. The tiny planet almost certainly is rocky in composition. Kepler-37c, the closer neighboring planet, is slightly smaller than Venus, measuring almost three-quarters the size of Earth. Kepler-37d, the farther planet, is twice the size of Earth.

The first exoplanets found to orbit a normal star were giants. As technologies have advanced, smaller and smaller planets have been found, and Kepler has shown that even Earth-size exoplanets are common.

"Even Kepler can only detect such a tiny world around the brightest stars it observes," said Jack Lissauer, a planetary scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "The fact we've discovered tiny Kepler-37b suggests such little planets are common, and more planetary wonders await as we continue to gather and analyze additional data."

Kepler-37's host star belongs to the same class as our sun, although it is slightly cooler and smaller. All three planets orbit the star at less than the distance Mercury is to the sun, suggesting they are very hot, inhospitable worlds. Kepler-37b orbits every 13 days at less than one-third Mercury's distance from the sun. The estimated surface temperature of this smoldering planet, at more than 800 degrees Fahrenheit (700 degrees Kelvin), would be hot enough to melt the zinc in a penny. Kepler-37c and Kepler-37d, orbit every 21 days and 40 days, respectively.

"We uncovered a planet smaller than any in our solar system orbiting one of the few stars that is both bright and quiet, where signal detection was possible," said Thomas Barclay, Kepler scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute in Sonoma, Calif., and lead author of the new study published in the journal Nature. "This discovery shows close-in planets can be smaller, as well as much larger, than planets orbiting our sun."

The research team used data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, which simultaneously and continuously measures the brightness of more than 150,000 stars every 30 minutes. When a planet candidate transits, or passes, in front of the star from the spacecraft's vantage point, a percentage of light from the star is blocked. This causes a dip in the brightness of the starlight that reveals the transiting planet's size relative to its star.

The size of the star must be known in order to measure the planet's size accurately. To learn more about the properties of the star Kepler-37, scientists examined sound waves generated by the boiling motion beneath the surface of the star. They probed the interior structure of Kepler-37's star just as geologists use seismic waves generated by earthquakes to probe the interior structure of Earth. The science is called asteroseismology.

The sound waves travel into the star and bring information back up to the surface. The waves cause oscillations that Kepler observes as a rapid flickering of the star's brightness. Like bells in a steeple, small stars ring at high tones while larger stars boom in lower tones. The barely discernible, high-frequency oscillations in the brightness of small stars are the most difficult to measure. This is why most objects previously subjected to asteroseismic analysis are larger than the sun.

With the very high precision of the Kepler instrument, astronomers have reached a new milestone. The star Kepler-37, with a radius just three-quarters of the sun, now is the smallest bell in the asteroseismology steeple. The radius of the star is known to three percent accuracy, which translates to exceptional accuracy in the planet's size.

West beats East 143-138 in NBA All-Star Game

HOUSTON? -- LeBron James had the ball in his hands and a comeback on his mind.

Kobe Bryant blocked those plans -- twice.

He may not leap like Blake Griffin, but Bryant can still get up when he needs to, especially when the defenseless part of the All-Star game is over and it's time to stop somebody -- even the league's best player.

Bryant blocked James' jumper, turning it into a dunk by Kevin Durant that helped the Western Conference put away the East 143-138 on Sunday.

On Michael Jordan's 50th birthday, the players most often compared to him turned the final minutes into a 1-on-1 duel, and it went to Bryant -- the guy Jordan said he'd pick between the two.

"It was a great block," Durant said. "I haven't really seen any MVP get a jumper blocked like that. It was a really great play.?

Chris Paul had 20 points, 15 assists and won MVP honors, and Durant scored 30 points. Griffin finished with 19, joining his Clippers teammate, Paul, in creating Lob City deep in the heart of Texas.

"You just want to play fast. I like to throw the lob. I like to see guys hit 3s," Paul said. "When we're out on the court with all that firepower, why wouldn't you want to make passes? You've got KD filling one of the lanes, you've got Blake, Kobe on the wing. There's nothing like it.?

Bryant added a second late block of James, the MVP of the 2006 game here after leading a big East comeback. This time, he scored 19 points but shot only 7 of 18 after making 60 percent of his shots in six straight games before the break.

"I'm known for my defense. I can defend. I'm pretty smart with my defense," said Bryant, who got the nod from Jordan over James based on his five championship rings. That's one less than MJ and four more than King James.

Carmelo Anthony led the East with 26 points and 12 rebounds.

"I think we played really good defense at the end of the game as a team," Durant said. "Kobe was really going with the ball. It's tough to stop LeBron, but he did his best. He was able to block a few of his shots. But CP did a really good job of keeping us in the game.?

The first dunk of the game came 16 seconds in, Paul throwing a pass to Griffin as part of the West's 7-0 start. The West led after each of the first three quarters, though was never ahead by more than eight points through three periods.

They finally pushed it into double figures early in the fourth fueled by former Oklahoma City teammates Russell Westbrook and James Harden, but couldn't put it away until a late run behind the guys from the city of Los Angeles -- who along with Lakers center Dwight Howard gave Los Angeles all but one of the West's starting spots.

Paul hit two 3-pointers, Bryant made a layup, and his block of James led to Durant's dunk that made it 136-126. Griffin had one last forceful dunk to help close it out, throwing a pass to himself off the backboard and climbing high in his neon green sneakers to slam it home and make it 142-134.

Harden had 15 points in his home arena, where the sights of the game were on the floor and the sounds were at the rim -- which shook repeatedly after thunderous dunks for most of the game before, as usual, players tried to make some stops down the stretch.

Players' sneakers were a variety of pastels and fluorescent colors that looked like they came right from Easter Sunday church, many clashing so badly with their multi-colored socks that they may as well have been created by spilling out random paint buckets.

James and Dwyane Wade wore purple, and Griffin's neon look was also sported by the usually not-so-loud Tim Duncan and Brook Lopez.

But the NBA's high-flyers sure could leap in them.

Durant slammed one down so hard at one point that he stumbled backward after landing, appearing woozy. He came in as the career leader in points per game with 28.3 and may have won a second straight MVP award if not for Paul's big finish.

But the Kobe-LeBron matchup down the stretch showed that even in an All-Star game, when it's time to determine a winner, the 34-year-old Bryant is all business.

"It was all in good spirit, man. It was just two guys that love to compete, love to go at it. So I had a lot of fun," said James, who at 28 has plenty of time to catch up to Jordan and Bryant in when it comes to NBA championships.

Bryant finished with only nine points but had eight assists. Griffin shot 9 of 11 from the field and didn't miss until trying to violently throw one down from a few feet away from the basket.

Indiana's Paul George scored 17 and Kyrie Irving had 15 for the East.

Not everybody had it so easy. Chris Bosh shot two airballs in the first quarter and was booed, tossed up another in the second, and had Tony Parker dribble the ball through his legs on defense. He was even pulled down the stretch by his own coach, Erik Spoelstra, right after Bryant blew right by him for a layup.

Bosh finished 3 of 9. Wade had 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting, the best performance of the three Heat players in the starting lineup. He and James helped the East pull out a two-point win in the 2006 game here, but the West didn't play Bryant-level defense back then.

"Second time in Houston, it was great," Wade said. "We didn't get the win, but we are all winners, because all 24 of us are All-Stars. So it was great.?

There were plenty of laughs, players performing comedic skits and poking fun at each other on the Toyota Center's massive overhead scoreboard. Even the celebrities that surrounded the court -- Westbrook almost crashed into Beyonce and Jay-Z while trying for a first-half steal -- seemed entertained.

Two of Houston's biggest basketball stars, Hakeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming, who was honored after the first quarter, and Olympic gold medalists Usain Bolt and Gabby Douglas were among the athletes who weren't in the game.

Players wore warmup jackets with patches commemorating their individual and team career accolades during a lengthy pregame that included a performance by Ne-Yo. They actually warmed up twice, needing to get loose again after watching and being introduced during the elaborate show.

The game capped a weekend of change in Texas, where David Stern presided over his final All-Star game as commissioner and players' association executive director Billy Hunter was voted out of office -- a result he seems likely to contest.

Boston's Kevin Garnett said before coming to Houston he thought his 15th All-Star selection would be his last, and turned it over to the young guys early. He played only 6 minutes of the first half before calling it a night.

Factbox: Armenia's presidential election

YEREVAN (Reuters) - Armenia holds a presidential election on Monday. [ID:nL6N0BH0RZ] Here are some key facts about the former Soviet republic and the main contenders in the election.

MAIN CONTENDERS

Seven candidates are running. The leading one is 59-year-old incumbent President Serzh Sarksyan, whose election to a first term in February 2008 sparked a violent post-election crisis that left at least ten people dead.

Opinion polls show the Sarksyan getting 67-69 percent of the vote on Monday.

He is followed by the 53-year-old, U.S.-born Raffi Hovannisian, a former foreign minister and a current leader of the opposition Heritage Party. Opinion polls put Hovannisian at 11-20 percent of the vote.

Polls indicated other candidates could count on less than 5 percent, including Paruyr Hayrikyan, 63-year-old leader of the National Self-determination Union, who was shot in the shoulder on January 31 near his home in the capital Yerevan.

Doctors removed the bullet from Hayrikyan's shoulder and said his life was not in danger, but he returned to hospital earlier this week saying he did not feel well.

ELECTION MONITORS

More than 300 international observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) as well as about 25,000 local observers were to monitor the vote.

KEY FACTS

POPULATION - 3.2 million as of December 2012, according to the National Statistics Service. The Central Election Commission says there are about 2.5 million eligible voters.

GEOGRAPHY - Landlocked, bordering Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran and Turkey, Armenia covers an area of 29,800 square km (11,500 square miles). The capital is Yerevan.

POLITICS - Armenia is locked in a prolonged dispute with neighboring Azerbaijan over the tiny region of Nagorno-Karabakh, over which they fought a war in the 1990s.

Armenia also has fraught relations with Turkey, in part because Ankara does not recognize as genocide the killing of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey during World War One.

ECONOMY - The Armenian economy grew about 7.0 percent in 2012, recovering from the 2008-09 global crisis, which resulted in a 14.2 percent contraction in 2009. The government forecasts 6.0 percent growth in 2013. Inflation eased to 3.2 percent in 2012 from 4.7 percent in 2011 and 9.4 percent in 2010, while the fiscal deficit was below 3 percent last year.

GOP foe of Hagel's nomination says let vote go on

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's pick to be defense secretary is unsuited to head the Pentagon, but Republican senators should stop stalling the nomination and allow a vote on Chuck Hagel, a leading opponent said Sunday.

"No, I don't believe he's qualified," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. "But I don't believe that we should hold up his nomination any further, because I think it's (been) a reasonable amount to time to have questions answered."

Republicans have angered Obama by delaying the formation of his second-term national security team, which includes Hagel, a former Republican senator from Nebraska, and John Brennan, the president's top counterterrorism adviser who's awaiting confirmation as CIA director.

Critics contend that Hagel, who snubbed McCain by staying neutral in 2008 presidential race when McCain ran against Obama, isn't supportive enough of Israel and is unreasonably sympathetic to Iran. The nomination also became entangled in Republican lawmakers' questioning of how the White House handled the Sept. 11 attack against a U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

GOP senators also have challenged his past statements and votes on nuclear weapons, and his criticism of the President George W. Bush's administration lingers.

Republicans last week held up a confirmation vote but have indicated that they eventually would relent and permit a vote when they return from their break on Feb. 25.

Obama's chief of staff, Denis McDonough, said Hagel, a Vietnam combat veteran, said was the right person to lead the Pentagon, and "has one thing in mind: How do we protect the country?"

Sen. Lindsey Graham, who's led the opposition with McCain to Hagel's nomination, said critics were "doing our job to scrutinize ... one of the most unqualified, radical choices for secretary of defense in a very long time."

"But at the end of the day," said Graham, R-S.C., "this is the president's decision. I give him great discretion. I can't believe one Democratic colleague is not upset by this choice enough to speak out."

Graham referred to a letter he received from Hagel in response to questions about past statements on Israel, and the senator said, "I'll just take him at his word, unless something new comes along."

McDonough was on ABC's "This Week," while McCain spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press" and Graham was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday."

Texas police chase, fatally shoot Florida fugitive

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) ? A Florida prisoner who escaped in Texas after stabbing a detective with his eyeglasses was shot and killed by law enforcement officers early Saturday after police responded to a report of a home burglary near Dallas, authorities said.

Alberto Morales was shot shortly after midnight when officers, with assistance from a police helicopter, spotted him in a wooded area near a lake in North Texas, Grapevine police Sgt. Robert Eberling said. Two hours earlier, officers responded to a report that jewelry and men's clothing had been stolen during a break-in at a home near where Morales was found.

Eberling said police officers and U.S. marshals were trying to apprehend Morales when he was shot, but he declined to say whether the fugitive had a weapon or made any threats toward them. He said Morales was still wearing part of his prison-issued jumpsuit as well as jogging pants, but Eberling said he couldn't comment on whether the stolen clothing and jewelry was found with him.

The residents arrived home around 10:30 p.m. Friday to discover the burglary at their home and called law enforcement officials, Eberling said.

The 42-year-old Morales escaped Monday at a Wal-Mart store parking lot in Grapevine, a community near the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Police said he used a sharp piece from his eyeglasses to stab a Miami-Dade detective who was transferring him by car to Nevada, where Morales was to serve a sentence of 30 years to life after being convicted of a sexual assault.

Det. Jaime Pardinas was expected to recover after being treated at a Dallas hospital for deep stab wounds to the neck, shoulder and back and a collapsed lung. It wasn't clear when he would be released.

Pardinas was accompanied by Miami-Dade Detective David Carrero during the transfer. They flew to Houston with Morales and then decided to drive the rest of the way after he became disruptive on the flight. They had stopped near the store while waiting for a third officer who was flying to the Dallas area to join them. Department policy requires three officers to be present for ground transfers of prisoners.

On a recording of a 911 call of the incident released Wednesday, Pardinas can be heard breathing heavily as he tells the operator that he's been stabbed. He described Morales' height, weight and appearance and then added, "He's a schizophrenic."

The escape set off a massive five-day manhunt in North Texas.

slideshow FLOWOOD ? Officials say new technology allowed regional forecasters to quickly confirm the tornado that tore through Hattiesburg this week and alert the public.

The Dual-polarization Doppler technology allowed forecasters to see the shape and size of debris inside the tornado. In the past, forecasters have generally relied on visual reports of tornadoes, which are difficult to get at night.

Because of the new technology, they were able to issue warnings confirming the tornado and give people time to get to safety.

Dozens of injuries were reported from tornadoes that struck south Mississippi this week, but no fatalities.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Robert Latham says he believes the new technology helped prevent tornado-related deaths.

National Weather Service offices throughout the country are being updated with the new technology.

Paint Chip Bookmark {Inspired By Pinterest Craft Tutorial}

InspiredByPinterest2

PaintChipBookmark_Header2 Has anyone else been magically drawn to the paint chip section of your local hardware store? All the pretty colors in a row so perfectly organized is spellbinding for me. Ok maybe I?m a design freak and this sort of thing is unique to me. If not, and you?d like a practical project to use these FREE and beautiful color swatches, read on!

When I saw this pin?I knew I wanted to try it. It?s such a simple idea but so cute! I went to the paint department and picked out every single chip that had red or pink on it and walked away with a smile on my face. My husband thought I was nuts I?m sure. The rest of the supplies I already had at home!

Supplies: Ribbon, scissors, hole punch, ballpoint pen or permanent marker (optional ? you?ll need one of these two as other options won?t stick to the paint), decorative punch (optional ? see pin link for example)

See simple instructions below image.

PaintChipBookmark_Collage2

1) Pick out your paint swatches from your favorite local hardware store.

2) Gather your supplies at home (get creative and think outside of what I did here (different types of ribbon, raffia, wrapping ribbon with curls, glitter, etc)

3) Cut your paint chip in half vertically if you want a narrow bookmark (these paint chips were quite wide).?I drew a line and let her cut them because they were from?her. They were perfectly imperfect.

*TIP:?This narrow?size fit perfectly tucked inside of my daughter?s valentine?s for school so each of her little friends got one in their goody bag!

4) Punch a hole in the top.

5) String your ribbon through.

6) Tie a knot at the top.

*TIP: This type of ribbon was raveling at the top so I tied a knot at each end. The pin link had a different type of ribbon that might work better.

7) Punch a decorate hole or write a cute saying. Nora thought the ribbons looked like bunny ears so I drew a little face at the top and wrote ?Some Bunny Loves You? in each color block. Of course then she told me it looked like a cat. Sigh.
*Other Ideas: ?You Color My World?, ?I Love You?, ?S M I L E?, ?H O P E?

Check out this Valentine?s Day idea with paint chips and a heart punch (I searched my local craft store but they were sold out of every single heart craft punch ? go figure). The link takes you to a beautiful blog with a few other creative, craft ideas! I?m hoping to do another extra-special paint chip craft in the future. Stay tuned!

IAEA, Iran end nuclear talks in Tehran, outcome awaited

DUBAI (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog and Iran ended a day of talks in Tehran on Wednesday, Iranian media reported, and Press TV state television said results were expected to be announced soon.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had hoped to bridge persistent differences with Iran preventing the Vienna-based U.N. agency from restarting a stalled investigation into suspected nuclear weapons research by Tehran.

The "negotiations between Iran and the Agency which started Wednesday morning ... ended a few minutes ago," the Iranian Students' News Agency said. "There is still no news of the details from this meeting."

Press TV, Iran's English-language state broadcaster, said on its website: "Iran and the United Nations nuclear agency have ended a new round of talks in Tehran with results from the ... meeting expected to be announced shortly."

Western diplomats accredited to the IAEA said they did not expect any breakthrough in Wednesday's talks in Tehran.

"Given Iran's uncompromising attitude and unwillingness to reach an agreement with the IAEA, I do not expect progress to be made," a Western envoy said.

The Islamic Republic denies Western allegations that its nuclear energy program is geared to developing the capability to produce atomic bombs. Iran says it is stockpiling enriched uranium only for civilian energy purposes.

Obama to announce 34K troops to be home in 1 year

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will announce in his State of the Union address that 34,000 U.S. troops will be home from Afghanistan within a year, two people familiar with his remarks said Tuesday.

That's about half the U.S. forces currently serving there, and marks the next phase in the administration's plans to formally finish the war by the end of 2014. The U.S. now has 66,000 troops in Afghanistan, down from a peak of about 100,000 as recently as 2010.

The U.S. is still finalizing plans for the size and scope of its military presence after the war ends. The White House has said it would be open to leaving no troops in Afghanistan, though it's likely that a small presence will remain, in keeping with the Pentagon's preferences.

The people familiar with Obama's remarks requested anonymity in order to discuss the troop drawdown ahead of the president.

Obama discussed the next phases of the drawdown with Afghan President Hamid Karzai during a day-long meeting in Washington last month, the first meeting between the two leaders since Obama's re-election. The two leaders agreed to accelerate their timetable for putting Afghan forces in the lead combat role nationwide, moving that transition up from the summer to the spring.

Obama will announce the troop drawdown and the future of the U.S. role in Afghanistan during a joint session of Congress that is otherwise expected to be dominated by the economy and other domestic issues.

Foreign policy has intruded in recent days, however, and the White House quickly condemned North Korea early Tuesday for its nuclear launch hours before Obama's address. The president is expected to make further remarks on this in his primetime speech.

Some private security analysts, as well as some Pentagon officials, worry that pulling out of Afghanistan too quickly will leave the battle-scarred country vulnerable to collapse. In a worst-case scenario, that could allow the Taliban to regain power and revert to the role they played in the years before 9/11 as protectors of al-Qaida terrorists bent on striking the U.S.

Many Americans, however, are weary of the war, according to public opinion polls, and are skeptical of any claim that Afghanistan is worth more U.S. blood.

The Obama administration gave the first clear signal in early January that it might leave no troops in the country after December 2014. Administration officials have said they are considering a range of options for a residual U.S. troop presence of as few as 3,000 and as many as 15,000, with the number linked to a specific set of military-related missions like hunting down terrorists.

Writing from the Peak: Story Tips #5 - The Ticking Clock

Welcome to the fifth, and final, installment of Story Tips From the Big Screen. ?This monthly column explores screen writing techniques that will help fiction writers tell a better story.?

*** ? ? *** ? ? *** ? ? ***

As authors, we are always looking for ways to crank up the dramatic tension within our stories.? One of the best ways to do this is with what is known as a time lock.? Time locks set a deadline for the hero to get what he wants and inject urgency into the story.? They force your hero into situations that could otherwise wait.? They throw obstacles into his path that either limit his time or limit his options.? (Some sources differentiate between time locks and option locks - see Dramatica software for details.) Dramatica sources tells us that if the primary obstacles thrown in front of your protagonist are delays, then what you?re looking at is a time lock.? If the obstacles are missing parts, the option lock is in effect. Some stories set the initial stage with a time element.? The FOX TV show 24 sets the ticking clock in place right away, and that element hangs over the heads of the characters all the way through.?? The finale of Friends set in place the departure of Rachel to Paris and the clock ticked away as Ross tried to tell her how he felt.? Small delays, followed by bigger and bigger delays, kept him from getting to her until it was too late - or so we thought for a minute. Other examples of this would include the movie High Noon, where the bad guys are due to show up on the noon train; Armageddon, where doom is coming to earth in the form of an approaching asteroid; and Casablanca, in which the plane will be leaving with or without Ilsa on it. Other stories use a ticking bomb (so to speak) to crank up the tension in the middle or closer to the climax.? Think of Speed in which the ticking clock was the gas gauge moving toward ?E?.? Romeo and Juliet are in no hurry to work out their problems and could have gone on ad infinitum until Juliet?s parents set the wedding date for Juliet and Paris.? Sleepless in Seattle?s final push involves getting to the top of the Empire State Building before it?s too late.? And in Monsters, Inc. Mike Wazowski (all one word at my house) is given thirty minutes to return Boo to her bedroom before the door closes forever and all is lost. Of course, not all stories can make use of a time lock.? But if you start paying attention to both the books you read and the movies you see, you?ll find that the time lock element can be very subtle.? It is simply a tool for raising the tension in a story.? Give it a try and have fun with it. Until next month, BICHOK (Butt in Chair, Hands on Keyboard)?

Martha Stewart releases vegetarian cookbook | MNN - Mother ...

While Martha Stewart isn't prepared to give up meat in her kitchen just yet, the 71-year-old has certainly made quite the transition over the last few years to decrease the amount she's preparing.?

?

That shift is reflected in a new cookbook by the media mogul titled "Meatless" that not only includes over 200 vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free recipes ? but also provides a road map for those looking to drop meat from their diet altogether.?

?

In an interview with the site My San Antonio, Stewart says her decision to embrace more vegetables in her diet was influenced heavily by family.

?

"It is both lifestyle and diet and the fact that my daughter is almost a vegan. And two new grandchildren who are vegetarians. I have to get with the program. I actually still do eat fish, but very little meat."

?

Such inspiration has been evident over the last couple years ? in particular specials on her former TV show dedicated to veganism, as well as showing viewers at home how to prepare a meatless Thanksgiving.?

?

Back in 2011, she told audience members privately that she was considering making a shift to a plant-based diet, especially after one experience with some beef.?

?

?I didn?t buy it from my regular butcher," she explained. "I usually buy three pounds of good ground chuck. And I took it home ? this was from the supermarket ? and I rolled it in my hands and my hands were stained red and I vowed I wouldn?t eat beef again," she said. "No really, it was horrifying ? What the heck do they do to the beef that made my hands red? It shouldn?t do that.?

?

According to the description, Martha's new veg cookbook contains recipes for dishes like?Black-Bean Tortilla Casserole,?Quinoa Veggie Burgers,?Chipotle Avocado Sandwich, and?Frittata with Asparagus, Goat Cheese. You can pick it up for a little under $16 over on Amazon here.?

Safe for Northeast commuters to return to work?

The steady drone of snow plows has been heard throughout the Northeast since Friday, and the region is recovering from what has been called one of the worst storms on record.

But as Monday morning draws near, is it safe for commuters to return to work?

Many of the region's transit systems and roads are getting back to business as usual. Boston's Logan International Airport and the three major airports that serve the New York City area have all resumed operations. However, fliers are advised to check with airlines directly for updates on service.

In the Boston area, a recent update by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority indicates service remains suspended on all modes, but are expected to resume by Monday, and In New York City, subways and buses are at or close to normal service levels.

Good day to telecommute
?Monday may just be a perfect day to work from home, if you can,? said Henry Harteveldt, travel industry analyst for Hudson Crossing, who recommends travelers check local and regional transit agencies' websites for updates and local media for road conditions and restrictions. Social media, especially Twitter, will be helpful, he said.

?Air travel will likely be disrupted into Tuesday or Wednesday,? he said, assuming there are no further weather problems. ?The challenge, of course, is finding seats. It?s going to be a scramble, and there will be many people whose travel plans will be severely disrupted. Be sure to subscribe to flight status updates from your airline, and if possible, have the updates sent to both an email address and a mobile phone.?

Mike Benjamin, CEO of FlightView.com, a website that provides real-time flight information, said since Friday, there have been more than 5,000 canceled flights in the region. ?But it?s been handled pretty well,? he said. ?Weather forecasts have gotten so much better in recent years,? allowing airlines and airports to be so much more proactive. ?Planes are not stuck in a snow bank somewhere, airlines can be back on schedule quicker and this has a good affect on passengers.? He expects things to be mostly back to normal by Monday morning.

Driving in risky areas is a serious decision, says Bella Dinh-Zarr, North American director of Make Roads Safe and director of road safety for the FIA Foundation for the Automobile and Society. ?In addition to putting yourself and others at risk,? crashes, even minor ones, ?take away resources from emergency first responders.?

Dinh-Zarr recommends taking public transportation, but if driving, to research the route beforehand to make sure it is open and safe. In addition, she suggests driving with others, ?for another set of eyes? and to decrease congestion.

?A significant challenge to commuters will be whether roads are not only plowed, but drivable,? Harteveldt agreed. ?If roads are icy, roads may not be safe to drive, and they certainly won't be able to support normal traffic speeds. Plan to allow extra time.?

'Enormous amount of work remaining'
Greg Cohen, president and CEO of the American Highway Users Alliance, said the preliminary assessment of the region?s roads and highways is good. "With rare exceptions (notably roads in Long Island), the mayors and governors throughout the northeast have done a good job of preparing motorists and their snow fighters for this weekend's blizzard.

?There appears to have been a great deal of improvement in New York City from the blizzard of 2010, and Mayor Bloomberg deserves credit for having snow fighters ready with plenty of salt, plows, and snow fighters in place.

"Obviously, it will be important for Governor Cuomo to review what went wrong in Long Island, with notably horrible problems on the Long Island Expressway and Route 25.?

News reports detailed cases of motorists left stranded in cars, even though people were advised to stay off the roads and highways. ?Of course, with more than two feet of snow on the ground in many areas, there is an enormous amount of work remaining,? said Cohen. ?The cleanup effort may take a week or more in some areas so it is critical that winter maintenance crews are able to keep up their intensity of work until safety and mobility is fully restored."

Suzanne Wenz, regional director of public relations for Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, said many staff members staying at the hotel, and others who live close by, worked long hours and did the jobs of colleagues unable to travel to work. ?The good news is with this storm, we had several days to prepare.?

At the White Barn Inn & Spa in Kennebunk Beach, Maine, an emergency team of four or five people was put together beforehand to ensure enough hands were on deck and so staff did not have to drive. ?They get to pick any room in the inn? to stay in during the storm and immediately afterward, and the chef prepares a special meal for them, said Corinne Finn-Heyl, the general manager.

?We turn some very dangerous experiences into fun experiences for our staff.?
