Tips on Making a Long Distance Relationship Work | Red Coat Studio

Most of our readers know that James and I have had to live apart for the past few months. Of course this isn?t by choice. Now, before we get to sad, James and I may be separated by the Atlantic Ocean, but we still have each other, and we will be together again very soon. So don?t think this is a sad article, because it?s not! This is meant to help anyone going through a long distance relationship.

Since the internet is now in everyone?s home, carried around on everyone?s smartphone, and I rarely meet anyone who doesn?t have at least one social media profile, long distant relationships aren?t uncommon. Let?s not forget about military couples as well. There are more LDRs now, than ever before. We?ve decided to share some of the things we do, to make a long distance relationship work when miles and miles apart.

lond distance relationship quote

You must be mutually head over heels in love with each other to make this work. It is not easy. You have to be secure with yourself and secure with your partner. You need a strong amount of dedication towards each other for the effort and patience LDR?s take out of you.

Be strong for each other. Sometimes James has a sad day, sometimes I have a sad day. So when one of us is blue, the other one becomes really positive and supportive. You guys are a team, and you need to act like a team! Your partner in your long distance relationship is the only other person who knows what you are going through, so lean on them. I?m not saying cry every time you speak, but share those feelings. James is the only person who understands how I can go out with friends, have a great time, and still like something is missing? him!

This leads to communication, which is crucial, but communication is an important factor of any relationship, not just distant ones. This article is about long distance relationships, so?

internet long distance love

Make time for each other!
They won?t be able to go to social events with you, and you may have a great time difference between you, so creating a space for each other is important. Even if people don?t understand why you are content with sitting at your laptop for hours and hours, doesn?t matter. They aren?t part of your relationship. Skype is the best invention for LDRs. James and I basically live on Skype. Even when one of us goes out, we can always come home and say hi right away. We sleep on Skype together, it?s comforting to hear your love sleeping next to you, even if it?s from a computer monitor.

eating dinner on skype

Find ways to do things together!
Sacrifice your regular meal times once in a while, set up Skype, light a candle if you want to really go all out, and eat together! Talk about your day, the meal you prepared, and future meals you will cook for each other.

Find something to watch together. James and I spend many a night curled up, having a cup of tea, and watching a movie or documentary together. Now being in two different countries, this becomes a challenge, but it can still be done. We find something on Youtube, documentaries are abundant on there, we pull it up and watch it at the same time. We use headphones, so the sound isn?t echoed, yet we can still talk about it as it?s playing.

Christmas Eve was a perfect example of how we made the best of things. We mailed each other gifts, opened them on Skype, and even though James face was on a computer screen, he was there and able to interact with my family.

James? parents have a big Sunday dinner every week, and he brings me via laptop, and I join in and get to converse with my lovely in-laws.

We also find games to play online together. Spades and Chess are two great examples.

long distance

Have a plan to see each other in person, always!
Maybe a visit can?t be done as soon as you want, because your partner is in the military, maybe you?re going through a visa process like us. Whatever your circumstances are, have a game plan to see each other. You need the goal, and you need the security that there is that goal.

ldr quote

James and I sincerely hope that these tips can help you during your long distance relationship. Even if the simple fact is that we made you feel your relationship is legit, and we understand it, then this article is a success.

We?d love to hear your long distance relationship stories, and tips in the comments below. :)

Love, Tamara

Ghosts and stress haunt Japan's tsunami survivors

HIGASHI-MATSUSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) - The tsunami that engulfed northeastern Japan two years ago has left some survivors believing they are seeing ghosts.

In a society wary of admitting to mental problems, many are turning to exorcists for help.

Tales of spectral figures lined up at shops where now there is only rubble are what psychiatrists say is a reaction to fear after the March 11, 2011, disaster in which nearly 19,000 people were killed.

"The places where people say they see ghosts are largely those areas completely swept away by the tsunami," said Keizo Hara, a psychiatrist in the city of Ishinomaki, one of the areas worst-hit by the waves touched off by an offshore earthquake.

"We think phenomena like ghost sightings are perhaps a mental projection of the terror and worries associated with those places."

Hara said post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) might only now be emerging in many people, and the country could be facing a wave of stress-related problems.

"It will take time for PTSD to emerge for many people in temporary housing for whom nothing has changed since the quake," he said.

Shinichi Yamada escaped the waves that destroyed his home and later salvaged two Buddhist statues from the wreckage. But when he brought them back to the temporary housing where he lived, he said strange things began to happen.

His two children suddenly got sick and an inexplicable chill seemed to follow the family through the house, he said.

"A couple of times when I was lying in bed, I felt something walking across me, stepping across my chest," Yamada told Reuters.

Many people in Japan hold on to ancient superstitions despite its ultra-modern image.

Yamada, like many other people in the area, turned to exorcist Kansho Aizawa for help.

Aizawa, 56, dressed in a black sweater and trousers and with dangling pearl earrings, said in an interview in her home that she had seen numerous ghosts.

"There are headless ghosts, and some missing hands or legs. Others are completely cut in half," she said. "People were killed in so many different ways during the disaster and they were left like that in limbo. So it takes a heavy toll on us, we see them as they were when they died."

In some places destroyed by the tsunami, people have reported seeing ghostly apparitions queuing outside supermarkets which are now only rubble. Taxi drivers said they avoided the worst-hit districts for fear of picking up phantom passengers.

"At first, people came here wanting to find the bodies of their family members. Then they wanted to find out exactly how that person died, and if their spirit was at peace," Aizawa said.

As time passed, people's requests changed.

"They've started wanting to transmit their own messages to the dead," Aizawa said.

Shinichi Yamada said life had improved since he put the two Buddhist statues in a shrine and prayed. He still believes the statues are haunted, but now thinks their spirits are at peace.

About the pope's red shoes? It's an old story

Pope Benedict XVI delivers his final blessing on Feb. 24, 2013. (L?Osservatore Romano/AP)

Since Pope Benedict XVI announced his retirement last month, interest in his successor, the Vatican and all things papal has peaked, with searches for answers about the pope?and the process for picking the next one?spiking online. Yahoo! has seen its own share of papal searches, from "What is the pope's ring?" and "What is pope emeritus?" to "What is a conclave?" and "Pope Benedict's salary." Below are answers to some of the most common (and a few not-so-common) questions about the pope perfect for your own private conclave. Enjoy.

Why is the pope called the pope?

"Pope" is Latin for "papa," or father. He is considered the bishop of Rome, leader of the worldwide Catholic Church and the successor of Saint Peter, the apostle.

Why does the pope get a new name when he's selected?

Like everything else, the process of naming the pope is steeped in tradition. During the early years of the church, Roman bishops used their own names after their elections. The first bishop to change his name after being elected pope was Mercurius, who decided it was not appropriate to have a pope be named after a Roman god. (Mercurius became Pope John II.) Some pontiffs followed suit and changed their names; others did not. According to the website ReligionFacts.com, the last pope to use his given name was Pope Marcellus II in 1555. Since then, every pope has chosen a papal name upon election.

[Also read: Pope breaks Twitter silence]

The choice is a symbolic one, often to signal which former pope the newly elected pontiff will emulate. In 2005, when Pope Benedict XVI chose his papal name, Vaticanologists said it was because he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the previous Pope Benedict and also call attention to the fact that that Benedict XV's seven-and-a-half-year reign was "a relatively short one."

By the way, there has never been a Pope Peter II. While there is no rule against picking Peter, elected popes have shied away from changing their name to that of the original apostle.

What do they call the outgoing pope now?

After becoming the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years, Pope Benedict XVI will be known in retirement as simply Benedict XVI, pope emeritus, emeritus pope, Roman pontifex emeritus or "his holiness," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said last week. The 85-year-old Benedict will retain his papal name rather than reverting to his birth name, Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger.

Why is the pope chosen by a conclave?

The idea behind a papal conclave is to speed up the process of picking the next pope. According to NBC News, conclaves were created in the 13th century by Pope Gregory X after a papal election that dragged on for nearly three years, infuriating the people of Viterbo, a medieval town where the pontiffs then lived.

"The people of Viterbo had finally had it and locked the cardinals in a big hall until they elected someone," Christopher Bellitto, associate professor of history at Kean University, told NBC. "They still wouldn't elect, so the good people of Viterbo ripped the roof off the hall. They still wouldn't elect, so then they started to give them only bread and water," eventually threatening to shower them with garbage.

"Lo and behold," Bellitto said, "they elected Pope Gregory," who quickly decided all future elections would be conducted by a conclave.

[Related: Who will be the next pope?]

But even before the 115 cardinals are locked away to make their decision, there's a whole lot of papal politicking to be done. "All the real business takes place at night over anisette and grappa," Bellitto said.

The College of Cardinals met on Monday for the first time since Pope Benedict announced his resignation. A series of formal and informal confabs are expected until the church announces a date for the conclave, which should begin sometime before March 20.

A repeat of Viterbo isn't likely. But given the tumultuous state of the Catholic Church, some are predicting it could be the longest conclave of the past 100 years.

If all else fails, the cardinals could always pick the next pope with a March Madness-style bracket, or what the Religion News Service is calling its "Sweet Sistine."

Where does the outgoing pope go while his successor is chosen?

During the papal conclave, Benedict will stay at the Apostolic Palace and the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo on Lake Albano, southwest of Rome, which historically functions as the pope's summer residence. When his successor is chosen, Benedict XVI will return to his new home, a former nunnery (Mater Ecclesiae or "Mother of the Church") on Vatican grounds?but not until renovations are completed this spring.

During the conclave, the pope's apartment at the Vatican will be sealed off to "ensure no documents in process prior to his resignation will be issued."

Why does the pope wear red shoes?

The red shoe tradition dates to 1566, according to NPR, "when St. Pope Pius V, a White Dominican, decided to change the papal vestment from red to white. The pope's cap, cape and shoes are the only bits of red left from the pre-1566 days."

Historically, the red shoes were festooned with a large gold cross or gold buckle when walking outside?"all the better for kissing," ABC said. Pope Paul XVI kept the red shoes but ditched the kissing?and the buckles?in the 1960s. All successive popes wore red shoes but one, John Paul II, who wore brown. Benedict reinstated the red shoes, opting for loafers made by a Rome-based, Peruvian-born shoemaker Antonio Arellano.

After his election, Italian media dubbed Benedict XVI the "Prada Pope" for what the Wall Street Journal called "the raft of designer labels floating around the new pontiff," including his stylish red shoes. (A senior Vatican official told the Journal they were not Prada but a custom-made pair from the pope's personal cobbler.)

Last week, the Vatican said Benedict would have to forgo the trademark red for a $200 pair of brown leather loafers made by Armando Martin Duenas, a Catholic shoemaker from Leon, Mexico. Since the Vatican's announcement, Duenas told NPR that his phone "has been ringing off the hook."

Why does the pope wear that hat?

That hat, called a miter, is "an ancient symbol of priestly authority," according to ABC News:

[Miters] come in several styles: simplex or simple, made of white linen or silk; pretiosa or precious, adorned in precious stones; and auriphrygiata or gold, made of gold cloth or white cloth with a gold fringe, typically worn during celebrations.

Benedict was known for wearing miters that were taller and often more colorful than his predecessor John Paul II's.

The rest of the pope's traditional wardrobe includes a white papal skullcap ("zucchetto"), hooded cape ("mozzetta"), gold cross, thin woolen shawl ("pallium," worn during Mass), Santa-like red-velvet winter cap with a white fringe ("camauro") and three-tiered tiara.

Oh, and a gold fisherman's ring, a traditional vestment worn in honor of St. Peter, the first pope and a fisherman by trade. The signet ring, used to officially seal papal documents and ensure their authenticity, is destroyed after a pope's death. In Benedict's case, his will be destroyed, too, using a special silver hammer, the Vatican said.

How much money does the pope earn?

Technically speaking, none. "The pope does not and has never received a salary," a Vatican spokesman told The New York Times in 2001 after some speculation arose about the source of his finances. But he doesn't need one. The Vatican covers his expenses, and the 1.2 billion members of the Catholic Church often donate money for His Holiness' use. In 2010, for example, U.S. bishops presented Pope Benedict XVI with a birthday gift of $870,000 from Catholics across the country "to support his charitable works."

What is the meaning behind the papal hand sign?

The papal hand sign, or Latin gesture of benediction, is a symbol of blessing in which the thumb, index and middle finger of the right hand is extended while the ring and pinky fingers are bent. The gesture was traditionally seen given by bishops, popes and saints outside of Mass.

But according to the website NewLiturgicalMovement.org, "the practice widely disappeared, without having ever been ... officially discouraged, let alone abolished."

What happens to the pope's Twitter feed?

In December, Pope Benedict XVI became the first pope to join Twitter, tweeting 140-character-or-less spiritual messages to more than 1.5 million followers from his verified @Pontifex account. (Benedict sent the first tweet, with the rest of His Holiness'-approved tweets published by someone in the Vatican.) Since his official resignation last week, all tweets by Benedict have been archived on the Vatican's website, and the @Pontifex feed, like the pope's seat itself, is currently "sede vacante."

Missing Pa. church pipe organ found; all forgiven

(AP) ? A Pittsburgh Roman Catholic church says the mystery of its missing pipe organ has been solved.

Police said Monday the church's former organist confessed he removed it last week for safekeeping.

Worshippers had struggled to understand how and why anyone would take the massive 200-pipe instrument from St. Justin's, which closed last month after merging with another church.

Authorities say the organist had a key to the building in the city's Mount Washington neighborhood and was worried the organ would be damaged by the cold of winter.

The church's pastor, Father Michael Stumpf, says taking the organ was an imprudent and terrible mistake but not a criminal one so the church is choosing to forgive and not press charges.

Drivers may soon find relief at the gas pump

It may not be fast enough for some consumers, but the drop in pump prices is accelerating.

Retail gasoline prices are down a penny overnight to $3.74 a gallon for the national average on Tuesday, which is down 3 cents from a year ago. Last month, pump prices on average were the highest on record for February.

Analysts said the gasoline price slide could continue.

Read More: US Oil and Gas Boom Takes Many by Surprise

"The savings could widen out to 20 cents to 25 cents per gallon this month," said OPIS analyst Tom Kloza. "The expanding gap should come as much cheaper wholesale prices work their way downstream and are compared with very steep increases that were characteristic of March 2012."

In 2012, almost every March day saw retail gasoline creep higher.

Read More: Tumbling Oil Prices May Have Further to Fall

Based on recent demand patterns, OPIS estimates that every penny of national savings on gasoline adds up to about $3.57 million per day.

"If U.S. gasoline prices move to say a 20 cent per-gal deficit to last year, there should be about $71.4 million more daily spending power for consumers after they take care of their fuel needs," Kloza said.

So far the biggest year-over-year price drops have been in California, Indiana, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington. But gasoline prices in Colorado and North Dakota, for example, are still significantly more expensive than a year ago.

Two NYC men arrested after woman killed, cut up with power saw

By Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

A 23-year-old man and his friend have been arrested in connection with the gruesome killing of his mother, whose body was cut up with a power saw and scattered in bags throughout their Bronx neighborhood, law enforcement officials tell NBC 4 New York.

Both men have admitted to chopping up the body and using a shopping cart to dump the parts along the curb in Morrisania, but each is pointing the finger at the other for killing the mother, 45-year-old Tania Byrd, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

The initial charges do not include murder. Bahsid McLean, 23, and William Harris, 26, are both charged with unlawful dissection of a human body, among other charges. They were in custody and lawyer information was not immediately available.

Read more at NBCNewYork.com

Law enforcement officials tell NBC 4 New York that the two men tell different stories. The son says he left the apartment he shared with his mother at about 3 a.m. Monday to go to the ATM. When he returned, he has told investigators, his friend had stabbed Byrd to death and threatened to kill him and his 6-year-old brother if he didn't help get rid of the body.

His friend, meanwhile, has told investigators that the son told him he killed his mother, and showed him a photograph of her, dead, asking for his friend's help in disposing of her corpse.

The two suspects agree that they went to a Bronx hardware store to purchase supplies for the job, including a power saw and gloves. Investigators say there are bloodstains at the apartment, and that it appears someone tried to clean up the mess with bleach.

An empty power saw box was also found there. The saw was found at the apartment of the friend's girlfriend, officials said.

Law enforcement officials say the pair cut up the body on Monday night and dumped it around 9:30 p.m. Surveillance camera video shows the son in the apartment building lobby, leaving the elevator with numerous bags, and then video outside the building shows two men wheeling away a shopping cart.

Officials say a man walking his dog along 158th Street in Morrisania early Tuesday morning came upon a plastic bag of what he thought were books. As he moved to open the bag, he noticed a vehicle circling the block and became nervous, so he took the bag around the corner and looked inside, finding two hands and a shoulder.

He sent his son to call police and continued walking the dog. About two blocks away on Eagle Avenue he and the dog came upon a suitcase, and the dog sat down next to it. The man opened the suitcase and found a woman's torso, wearing a bra, according to law enforcement officials.

Responding police found a plastic bag further down Eagle Avenue that contained a leg and a foot, and then nearby on Cauldwell Avenue, they found a black suitcase with a leg and the woman's head.

People who knew Byrd were stunned about the grisly killing.

"Every time you see her, she would have a smile on her face," said neighbor Chastity Agosto. "How could a son do that to his mother?
