Armed Forces Bowl 2012: Rice Defeats Air Force, 33-14 (VIDEO)

FORT WORTH, Texas -- When Rice freshman quarterback Driphus Jackson was suddenly thrust into action in the Armed Forces Bowl, he drove the Owls within 2 yards of a tying touchdown before his errant pitch.

Jackson more than made up for that miscue that ended the first half.

After starter Taylor McHargue was knocked out the game because of a concussion, Jackson threw for 264 yards with two second-half touchdowns to Jordan Taylor, and Rice beat Air Force 33-14 on Saturday.

"I couldn't get down (after the fumble). The guys had all the confidence in the world in me," Jackson said. "Things slowed down for me in the second half."

Rice (7-6), which had to win four in a row just to get bowl eligible, has won both of its bowl games under sixth-year coach David Bailiff. Before their 2008 Texas Bowl victory, the Owls had lost their only four bowl games since winning the 1954 Cotton Bowl.

"This football team has overcome a lot of adversity and really played well down the stretch," Bailiff said. "We had a very motivational talk with our team just before the winning streak, and our coaching staff and players worked hard and kept improving every game."

And this is a Rice team with only seven seniors, three of them tight ends.

The Owls were 1-5 after a loss at Memphis on Oct. 6, and their only loss was 28-24 to Conference USA champion Tulsa.

"We had our ups and downs. To cap it after the start we had, it means the world," said running back Turner Petersen (nine carries for 81 yards).

Air Force (6-7) scored on consecutive drives in the second quarter with backup quarterback Kale Pearson in the game. But the Falcons had a season-low 214 total yards.

Jackson's first series ended with a bad pitch near the goal line only 2 seconds before halftime, when the Owls trailed 14-7. It was the third lost fumble by Rice in the second quarter.

"We didn't make a lot of adjustments at halftime," said Taylor, who had nine catches for 153 yards and three TDs, including a 16-yarder from McHargue in the first quarter. "The coaches just told us to execute and protect the football better than we did in the first half."

Jackson had consecutive completions of 25 and 22 yards before a 2-yard keeper and then a 22-yard TD to Taylor on Rice's opening drive of the second half.

The Owls went ahead to stay, 21-14, when Jackson hit six passes in a row to set up Charles Ross' 2-yard TD run.

"As soon as the starter went out, we knew there were adjustments we had to make," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. "We put an enormous amount of strain on our defense. Any time you make only 12 first downs, you're going to tax your defense."

Jackson, who started against Houston when McHargue had a shoulder problem, completed 15 of 21 passes and rushed for 32 yards.

"After having one start under my belt, I knew what to expect," Jackson said. "I had an idea of how to manage the game. They gave me the keys and told me to go."

McHargue never returned after a helmet-to-helmet collision on a 5-yard run with about 5 minutes left in the first half.

He put his head down and ran into defensive back Steffon Batts, and fumbled. McHargue was noticeably wobbly while being helped to the sideline.

The Falcons then went 35 yards in nine plays for a 14-7 lead. Mike DeWitt converted fourth-and-1 with a 2-yard run, and Wes Cobb scored on a 1-yard run.

Jackson then came in for the Owls and had keepers of 5 and 14 yards before a 23-yard pass to Taylor. After another 10-yard pass for first-and-goal from the 2 before Jackson's bad pitch.

McHargue hit 6 of 8 passes for 31 yards. He stood on the sideline after halftime wearing a warmup suit and a cap.

Since the Falcons' last game, senior quarterback Connor Dietz has graduated from the academy and been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Dietz ran six times for 11 yards and completed only 1 of 3 passes.

Pearson wasn't must better, 2-of-8 passing for 44 yards with six carries for 11 yards. But he was on the field for both of Air Force's scoring drives with a 9-yard TD run

The Falcons have made a school-record six consecutive bowl appearances under Calhoun, but are 2-4 in those games (1-3 in the Armed Forces Bowl). Air Force lost four of its last five games to finish this season.

Chris Boswell made field goals of 24 and 25 yards in the fourth quarter, before Jackson hit Taylor for a 34-yard TD with 1:38 left.

Boswell, who made six field goals of at least 50 yards during the regular season, had apparently made a 52-yarder early in the second quarter before officials blew the whistle for an Air Force timeout. Boswell got another try, but pushed it wide right with about 9 minutes left in the first half.

That's when Pearson took over for Air Force, leading them 66 yards in 10 plays. He had a 15-yard pass and ended the drive with a wide sweeping run to get into the front corner of the end zone to tie the game at 7.

"We really struggled. We had a good second quarter," Calhoun said. "But there's no way you win this game playing well in one quarter."

Obama Suggests Any 'Cliff' Deal Would Be Small

With less than two days remaining for Congress to reach a budget agreement that would avoid the so-called " fiscal cliff," President Obama today suggested that a small deal remains the best hope to avoid the perilous package of spending cuts and tax increases.

In an interview aired this morning on NBC's "Meet the Press" the president said if Republicans agreed to raising taxes on top income earners it should be enough to avoid the triggers that would execute the $607 billion measure. Economists agree that going over the cliff would likely put the country back in recession.

"If we have raised some revenue by the wealthy paying a little bit more, that would be sufficient to turn off what's called the sequester, these automatic spending cuts, and that also would have a better outcome for our economy long-term," he said.

Saying the "pressure is on Congress to produce," the president did not specify what income level his party would deem acceptable as the cutoff for those who would see their tax rates remain at current levels. The president has called for expiration of the "Bush-era" tax cuts to affect household earnings over $250,000 since the campaign, but has reportedly floated a $400,000 figure in past negotiations. Speaker John Boehner once offered a $1 million cut-off in his failed "Plan B" proposal, which failed to garner enough support among the House Republicans.

"It's been very hard for Speaker Boehner and Republican Leader McConnell to accept the fact that taxes on the wealthiest Americans should go up a little bit as part of an overall deficit reduction package," the president said.

Domestic programs would lose $55 billion in funding should sequestration pass, including $2 billion to Medicare and unemployment benefits. The Pentagon would take a $55 billion loss as well, or 9 percent of their budget.

Repeating remarks he made Friday after a meeting with congressional leaders, Obama said that should negotiations fail he has asked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to introduce a stripped- down proposal to Congress for a straight up-or-down vote - if it isn't blocked.

"If all else fails, if Republicans do in fact decide to block so that taxes on the middle class do in fact go up on January 1, then we'll come back with a new Congress on January 4, and the first bill that will be introduced on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle-class families," he said of the worst case scenario. "I don't think the average person is going to say, 'Gosh, you know, that's a really partisan agenda.'"

The interview was taped Saturday while Reid and his GOP counterpart Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky scrambled to their offices for a solution behind closed doors. Press staking out Capitol Hill reported little public activity from the leaders or their surrogates. If negotiations are successful, the lawmakers could introduce a bill for vote this afternoon.

Republican leaders bit back at the president's remarks. In a written statement Speaker Boehner said casting blame was "ironic, as a recurring theme of our negotiations was his unwillingness to agree to anything that would require him to stand up to his own party. "

"In an effort to get the president to agree to cut spending - which is the problem - I put revenues on the table last year, and I put them on the table again last month," he wrote. "Republicans made every effort to reach the 'balanced' deficit agreement that the president promised the American people, while the president has continued to insist on a package skewed dramatically in favor of higher taxes that would destroy jobs."

Senator McConnell's office issued this response to the NBC appearance:

"While the President was taping those discordant remarks yesterday, Sen. McConnell was in the office working to bring Republicans and Democrats together on a solution. Discussions continue today."

Regardless of outcome, talk of a comprehensive budget deal is gone and any bill would likely set up a series of smaller partisan roadblocks in the weeks and months to come. For example, if any hypothetical legislation managed to dodge tax increases for the middle class it may still not address the looming debt ceiling, which Treasury can avoid using accounting tricks for approximately two months.

A small deal may also not address the estate tax, another central point of the brinkmanship. Currently standing at 35 percent, Republicans want to leave that rate as-is after exempting the first $5 million in estate value. Meanwhile Democrats have called for a 45 percent tax after a $3.5 million exemption. Should negotiations fail, it would climb to 55 percent after a $1 million exemption after the New Year.

ABC's Sunlen Miller and the Associated Press contributed to this report, which has been updated.

Yemen: Al-Qaida offers bounty for US ambassador

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has offered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa or an American soldier in the country.

An audio produced by the group's media arm, the al-Malahem Foundation, and posted on militant websites Saturday said it offered three kilograms of gold, worth $160,000, for killing the ambassador.

The group said it will pay 5 million Yemeni riyals ($23,000) to anyone who kills an American soldier inside Yemen.

It said the offer is valid for six months.

The bounties were set to "inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad," the statement said.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa did not respond to an Associated Press phone call asking for comment.

Washington considers al-Qaida in Yemen to be the group's most dangerous branch.

The group overran entire towns and villages last year by taking advantage of a security lapse during nationwide protests that eventually ousted the country's longtime ruler. Backed by the U.S. military experts based at a southern air base, Yemen's army was able to regain control of the southern region, but al-Qaida militants continue to launch deadly attacks on security forces that have killed hundreds.

In the capital, Sanaa, security officials said two gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed two intelligence officers early Sunday as they were leaving a downtown security facility. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations, said all intelligence and security officers have been instructed to take precautionary measures outside working hours.

The government blames al-Qaida for the killing of several senior military and intelligence officials this year mainly by gunmen on motorbikes.

The officials said security authorities in Sanaa have launched a campaign against motorcyclists suspected of involvement in these attacks or other crimes, arresting about 200 for questioning for violations, including driving motorcycles without license plates.

Indian gang rape victim shows signs of organ failure: hospital

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The condition of an Indian medical student whose gang rape triggered mass protests has deteriorated and there are signs her vital organs have failed, the Singapore hospital treating her said.

The 23-year-old, who was severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was flown to Singapore by the Indian government on Wednesday for specialist treatment.

Most rapes and other sex crimes in India go unreported and offenders are rarely punished, women's rights activists say. But the brutality of the assault on December 16 triggered public outrage and demands for both better policing and harsher punishment for rapists.

The case has received blanket coverage on cable television news channels. The woman has not been identified but some Indian media have called her "Amanat", an Urdu word meaning "treasure".

"As of 9 p.m. Singapore time on Dec 28 (1300 GMT), the patient's condition has taken a turn for the worse. Her vital signs are deteriorating, with signs of severe organ failure," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Kelvin Loh said in a statement on Friday.

"Her family members have been informed that her condition has deteriorated and they are currently by her side to encourage and comfort her," he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has been battling criticism that it was tone-deaf to the outcry and heavy-handed in its response to the protests in the Indian capital.

Some Indian medical experts questioned the decision to airlift the woman to Singapore, calling it a risky maneuver given the seriousness of her injuries. They said she was already receiving the best possible care in India, which possesses world-class medical facilities.

FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE

The Singapore hospital said earlier on Friday that the woman had suffered "significant brain injury" and was surviving against the odds. She had already undergone three abdominal operations before being flown to Singapore.

Demonstrations over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the attack, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of New Delhi.

If the woman dies it could trigger new protests and possibly fresh confrontations with the police, especially in the Indian capital, which has been the focus of the demonstrations.

New Delhi has been on edge since the weekend clashes. Hundreds of policemen have been deployed on the streets of the capital and streets leading to the main protest site, the India Gate war memorial, have been shut for long periods, causing commuter chaos in the city of 16 million.

Political commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration that many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social and economic issues.

Many protesters have complained that Singh's government has done little to curb the abuse of women in the country of 1.2 billion. A global poll by Thomson Reuters Foundation in June found that India was the worst place to be a woman because of high rates of infanticide, child marriage and slavery.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

"We share the anguish and anger with the country over this heinous crime," Prime Minister Singh told reporters on Friday. "Our prayers are with the brave young girl and best possible medical care is being provided to her."

Promised Land Movie Review

The environmental battle over natural gas drilling may not seem like the material that crowd-pleasing movies are built on, but Promised Land overcomes its potentially bland fracking setup to be a genuinely entertaining movie. In fact, this movie isn't really about fracking as much as it is the moral dilemma faced by its main character, portrayed by Matt Damon. He and John Krasinski square off in the Gus Van Sant-directed film as combating forces on either side of the fracking debate. They handily influence a small town (and the audience), though both campaigns are as compelling as they are dubious.

Damon plays Steve Butler, a slick but likable salesman, with familiar ease. He represents Global, a megacorporate natural-gas company that buys the drilling rights to citizens' land. Steve's got one last town (the fictional McKinley) to win over with his partner Sue (Frances McDormand, a pleasure to watch, as always) before he's promoted up the corporate ranks. They think they've got it in the bag until Dustin (Krasinski), an environmentalist with some bold claims about the detrimental effects of fracking and a whole lot of photos of dead cows, comes into town. Watching the tug of war that ensues to win the favor of the small population gets a little tedious, but the competitive dynamic between Steve and Dustin is one of the strengths of the film. Find out what else I thought of Promised Land when you read more.

While the environmental issue provides the basis of the film, it's much easier to get absorbed in the way Steve and Dustin each rally the town. Steve is amiable, but it's never clear exactly how much he knows about the effects of fracking, so it's hard to judge him for selling people a deal that may include poisoned land and dead livestock. On the other hand, the audience should be rooting for the forthright Dustin, but there's something about him that's also a touch shady. Rosemarie DeWitt plays a supporting role as Alice, a local teacher who sparks a romantic rivalry for Steve and Dustin. Though her presence in the movie feels a little convenient, it's not in vain, as her affections serve as a primary motivator for Steve.

The movie definitely takes a stance on its subject matter, but you don't have to agree with Promised Land's politics to enjoy it. You do learn about fracking, but at its core, this is a film about internal struggles. I was expecting to see graphs and scale models of how fracking affects land ? and, actually, I did see those ? but between the natural gas drilling lessons, there are fascinating characters.

Invest In Your Life | Feng Shui Tips | The Tao of Dana

jeff_koons

(Jeff Koons)

Investment.? Its not just money. Its time. Its the willingness to expose yourself.? Its vulnerability.? Its effort.? Its?sometimes sacrifice.? Investment is? the foundation of all wealth.? Investment is the willingness to show up for each day?and make it count.

I realized something remarkable when I looked back upon the last year: Things move the fastest when there?s a real investment in what is happening.? When life was moving most ?right? I was deeply invested on every level in the outcome.? That?s not consistent.?I?ve been too comfortable at times.? Too comfortable feels uncomfortable. ?Next year, I?m willing to go all in.?

Are you invested in yourself & your life?

Working with so many clients in the past few years and going through my own seismic wave of life earthquake and aftershocks, I realize that there is a? simple litmus test to see if you are totally invested in your life: ask yourself if you feel truly and unilaterally excited about things.? People who are all-in tend to complain very little and move fairly quickly. Oh, yes? when you are all-in you tend to realize that you can technically fail (its not really failing in you are giving things 100,000 %) ?and the stakes are high enough to make it interesting.

Where and how to start investing more in yourself??

Some ideas:

Buy yourself a gift that will dramatically improve your health & personal energy.? For you this might mean a trip to a nutritionist, a gym membership, acupuncture, energy work, new sneakers, holistic remedies, vitamins?. For me, this year, its a Vitamix. I know what high-powered smoothies and daily doses of greens do for my universe and mind, and a monster blender is invaluable.

Give yourself a beauty regime. For both men & women, some attention to presentation is a huge step up in life.? Trust me, when my world was rocked by a sudden family catastrophe, I lived in sweatpants, glasses and a makeup-free face.? I wanted to vanish.? As I recovered, a beauty regime was a big way to introduce myself back to society.? Its not about perfection, its about pride and self-esteem.? Sometimes you don?t need money but, rather, to take the?time and attention to be more of your most beautiful.?

Learn more about your sexuality, intimacy levels?and its creative power.? Kim Anami?s work has taught me so much about sexual energy & one?s life.? If you aren?t respecting and nurturing your sexual energy in a positive way, you are not fully experiencing life.? Check her out right HERE.? Her writing is so amazing, it will astonish you in an of itself.

Up-level your home, even in a small way.? Decide that you will invest in something you need- be it a proper?desk chair or a new set of sheets- and do?it!? It can only fully enhanse your life!?This entire blog is packed with ways to make improvements. Pick one that appeals to you and do it!!!

Commit to building wisdom in an area you are lacking. This is a big one: if you are too afraid to take leaps in life, you may need to learn more first.? Knowledge builds your confidence and fills in important blanks.? Every so often I stroll through Amazon for an hour on so?and buy a load of books to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and interest. You can do the same with your local library, though I tend to read books more?than once and I love supporting authors and experts!

I?m not gonna lie- the act of making self-investment can be emotional and even terrifying at first?but if you know its your path, it will fall into place.???Whether you take an idea above or take from your own wish list, my personal wish for you is that you dare to put more of your excellence into the world and that you create more joy around you as you do!?

************

If you are a feng shui tip lover and want to?get an inside-line on all sorts of?gorgeous, fun inspiration, methods and new goodies to help you design your dream life, join?my special list right?HERE.???

And, if you are ready to?take it to the next level? & ?design your dream life with me, you can work with me one-on-one?online?or?in-person?to make the big moves!

I always love hearing from you! xoxo Dana

PFT: Patriots TE Gronkowski out another week

Ryan Tannehill, Brian Hartline, Nate ClementsAP

All 32 teams play on either Saturday or Sunday, which means that all 32 teams submitted their final injury reports of the week on Friday.

As we do every week, we?ve gone through all of them to pull out the information you need to know before kickoff. So, without any further ado, here?s your Week 16 injury report roundup.

Falcons at Lions

Safety William Moore (hamstring) and wide receiver Roddy White (knee) are both questionable for the Falcons. The Lions aren?t likely to have tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who is doubtful due to an ankle injury. Safety Louis Delmas is absolutely not injury prone, but he is questionable with the knee injury that?s bothered him all season.

Raiders at Panthers

Knee and hamstring issues will keep Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour out for another week. Safety Tyvon Branch (neck, ankle) and wide receiver Juron Criner (hip) are questionable. Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is also questionable while center Geoff Hangartner is doubtful with a foot injury.

Saints at Cowboys

Fullback Jed Collins (knee, toe) won?t go for the Saints. Running back Chris Ivory (hamstring) and cornerback Patrick Robinson (groin) are questionable. Running back Pierre Thomas, who popped up on the injury report Thursday with a knee injury, is probable. The Cowboys remain without defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (groin) and they have a pair of questionable players in linebacker Ernie Sims (concussion) and wide receiver Kevin Ogletree (illness).

Titans at Packers

Center Kevin Matthews (ankle) won?t play for the Titans. Wide receivers Kendall Wright (rib) and Damian Williams (hamstring) are questionable. The Packers ruled out tight end?Tom Crabtree (hamstring), wide receiver Jordy Nelson (hamstring), running back James Starks (knee), defensive end C.J. Wilson (knee) and safety Charles Woodson (collarbone). Running back Alex Green is questionable because of a concussion.

Vikings at Texans

The Vikings head to Houston in good health with defensive end Brian Robison (shoulder) listed as the only player less than probable. A healthy Texans team will be waiting for them. Cornerback Alan Ball (foot) is out, but linebacker Brooks Reed (groin) is probable to make his return and every other player on the injury report joins him with that likely to play designation.

Patriots at Jaguars

As always, the Patriots? injury report is a statement about the very nature of injury reports as they list 19 players as questionable and no player with another designation. Among them are tight end Rob Gronkowski (forearm), defensive end Chandler Jones (ankle) and wide receiver Wes Welker (ankle). Running backs Rashad Jennings (concussion) and Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) are out once more for Jacksonville, while cornerbacks Aaron Ross (calf) and Dwight Lowery (foot) are questionable.

Colts at Chiefs

The Colts ruled out running back?Delone Carter (ankle), linebacker Kavell Conner (hamstring), center Samson Satele (ankle) and safety Tom Zbikowski (knee). Center A.Q. Shipley, who would replace Satele, is questionable with a knee injury and tackle Winston Justice has the same designation thanks to a biceps injury. Chiefs tight end Tony Moeaki (head) is doubtful and tackle Branden Albert (back) is questionable.

Bills at Dolphins

The Bills are hopeful they?ll get center Eric Wood (knee) back in the lineup this week. He?s listed as questionable, as is Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline (back). Defensive tackle Randy Starks is also questionable after missing practice all week for reasons not related to an injury and unknown to us. Wide receiver Davone Bess (back) and linebacker Koa Misi (ankle) are out for the second straight week.

Chargers at Jets

Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin (knee) is doubtful for the Chargers while linebacker DeMorrio Williams (ankle) is questionable. Jets tight end Dustin Keller (ankle) is likely to miss another game after being listed as doubtful.?Wide receiver Braylon Edwards (hamstring), wide receiver Mardy Gilyard (illness), defensive tackle Sione Pouha (back), linebacker Ricky Sapp (ankle), wide receiver Chaz Schilens (calf,?knee) and linebacker Bryan Thomas (chest) are all questionable, while quarterback Mark Sanchez?s wounded pride is nowhere to be found on the injury report.

Redskins at Eagles

Quarterback Robert Griffin III (knee) is expected to start for the Redskins, who listed tackle Tyler Polumbus (head) and defensive end Stephen Bowen (biceps) as questionable. Running back Stanley Havili (hamstring) is out and running back Chris Polk (toe) is doubtful. The Eagles do expect to have LeSean McCoy back in the starting lineup in his return from a concussion.

Bengals at Steelers

The Bengals listed cornerbacks Adam Jones (hamstring) and Dre Kirkpatrick (head) as questionable. Cornerback Ike Taylor (ankle) will miss another game for the Steelers and it looks like tackle Mike Adams, doubtful with an ankle injury, is going to be out as well.

Rams at Buccaneers

Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan (thigh) is questionable, as is Buccaneers cornerback LeQuan Lewis (knee). Tampa defensive end Aaron Morgan (shoulder) is doubtful, which wraps up a brief injury report ahead of this matchup.

Browns at Broncos

The Browns ruled out wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi (knee), tight end Jordan Cameron (head) and safety Tashaun Gipson (foot). Broncos guard Chris Kuper (head, ankle) is doubtful for the game.

Bears at Cardinals

Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton (clavicle) is doubtful after missing last week?s game. Wide receiver Earl Bennett (concussion) and cornerback Tim Jennings (shoulder) are both questionable. Wide receiver Early Doucet (concussion) and guard Mike Gibson (calf) are out for Arizona. Left tackle Nate Potter is questionable with an ankle injury.

Giants at Ravens

Center David Baas (hip,?shoulder), tight end Travis Beckum (knee), running back Ahmad Bradshaw (knee,?foot), safety Kenny Phillips (knee), safety Tyler Sash (hamstring), guard Chris Snee (hip) and defensive end Justin Tuck (shoulder) are all questionable for the Giants. Reports are more optimistic on Bradshaw than they are on Tuck, who missed practice all week. Cornerback Prince Amukamara (hamstring) is probable after missing last week?s game. Safety Bernard Pollard (chest) is likely to miss his second straight game while guard Marshal Yanda (ankle) and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (ankle) are better bets to return to action after getting questionable tags. Wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Bernard Pierce are also questionable pending the results of their baseline concussion tests.

49ers at Seahawks

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh says defensive tackle Justin Smith is questionable with an elbow injury, but the injury report says he?s doubtful. Linebacker Clark Haggans (shoulder) is also doubtful. Wide receiver Mario Manningham (shoulder) is questionable. Wide receiver Sidney Rice (knee), cornerback Walter Thurmond (hamstring) and cornerback Marcus Trufant (hamstring) will all be game-time decisions for Seattle.

Net Neutrality Returns - Hit & Run : Reason.com - Reason Online

At the end of 2010, the Federal Communications Commission passed so-called "net neutrality" rules giving the FCC new power to regulate traffic management practices on data networks. Those rules are currently being challenged?by Verizon, which argues that the rules violate the First Amendment and lack sufficient statutory basis. A?court is expected to rule on the matter next year.

In the meantime, though, Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden is proposing new legislation that would enforce certain traffic management rules. Via Wired:

A proposal forbidding internet service providers from turning the data-cap meter off to grant a so-called internet fast lane to preferential online services was introduced Thursday in the Senate.

The bill by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) comes a week after a report found that the institutionalization of data caps by ISPs?is geared toward profiteering rather than the stated goal of managing traffic congestion.

?A covered internet service provider may not, for purposes of measuring data usage or otherwise, provide preferential treatment of data that is?based on the source or the content of the data,? Wyden?s bill reads.

Ars Technica noted that Comcast had?not counted its Xbox video-streaming app against its data caps. Comcast, however, no longer enforces its data caps.

?Data caps create challenges for consumers and run the risk of undermining innovation in the digital economy if they are imposed bluntly and not designed to truly manage network congestion,??Wyden said in a statement.

Among other things, the proposal demands a standardized method for measuring data and also questions data caps altogether. That?s because it grants the Federal Communications Commission with regulatory power over data-cap pricing.

So a report has suggested that Internet service providers are, or at least were, arranging their business and pricing practices in a way that allows them to maximize their profits? It is surprising that anyone was able to uncover evidence to this effect. And obviously it must not be allowed to happen again.?

The Business Blog Editorial Calendar Every Marketer Needs [Free Template]

.

Blog Editorial Calendar Templateintermediate

At this point, we know that consistent, frequent blogging is critical to your business? online success. In fact, according to the 2012 State of Inbound Marketing, 70% of companies that publish articles 2-3 times per week have acquired a customer through their blog. Furthermore, according to our 2012 Marketing Benchmarks report, companies that increase blogging from 3-5X/month to 6-8X/month almost double their leads. So how do you turn your company blog into a thought leadership-building, lead generating machine so you can achieve this kind of success?

I?ll give you a hint: organization and consistency is key! One of the greatest blogging challenges is not the actual writing. It's stuff like brainstorming topics, targeting the right readers, and optimizing posts with the right keywords and calls-to-action. Lucky for you, this is where our new blog editorial calendar template comes in handy! This free template is designed to keep you on track as you develop awesome content that your prospects, customers, and fans will fall in love with. Download this template to stay organized, monitor your keyword use and topic balance, and manage your blog's timing and deadlines. In this blog post, we'll pick apart the pieces of your new editorial calendar template so you can use it to to its fullest potential.

Authors and Due Dates

Author dateFirst and foremost, accountability is the foundation to business blogging success. You can have the best bloggers who create the most remarkable content in your industry, but if those writers don?t follow through, you?re stuck.

Share this calendar with anyone who will be contributing to your blog (in fact, consider plopping it into a Google doc for sharing and collaboration purposes!), and make sure they know when they?re being asked to contribute. It also makes a lot of sense to assign due dates that are at least a few days ahead of your planned publishing date. I?d recommend giving them a full week -- you may want a larger buffer in case your bloggers need extra time to complete their assignments. This will allow you the time you need to review their articles, go through the necessary rounds of feedback and revisions with writers -- so your writers can improve over time -- and do your final editing and prep work.

And don?t forget about guest bloggers, either! Getting external writers to contribute is a great way to not only fill gaps in your editorial calendar, but also to boost social sharing, reach, and the inbound links coming in to your blog content. Guest bloggers are generally proud to share their words on your awesome, thought-provoking blog, so they?ll be eager to push their contributions across their network. It may not be wise to share your internal Google Doc ed cal with external contributors, but be sure to include their contributions in your planning, and give them due dates and deadlines like you would your internal contributors. And to maximize the reach of your guest contributor's articles, consider scheduling them for publishing on the days during which people are more active in social media (Tuesday-Thursday).

Titles and Content Details

Remember: An engaging title can make or break a blog post. After all, who?s going to read a post that has no hook? Follow the six characteristics of exceptional blog titles: Be actionable, brief, keyword-conscious, clear, definitive, and intriguing. Creating a sense of urgency (e.g. "7 Common SEO Myths to Throw Out the Window Immediately"), or being controversial (e.g. "Is PR Dead?") are also great attention-grabbing tactics. (Just don't be controversial for the sake of being controversial.) ?How-to? titles, because they imply that the reader will get actionable advice on how to do something specific, also work great.

In your blog editorial calendar template, make sure you write out your full blog titles to ensure you're using a mid of title styles and techniques. This will help you maintain a balanced mix of how-to's, numbered list posts, thought leadership-style content, etc. Remember: Variety is the spice of life!

?

Topic content

?

Make sure you jot down some notes under the 'Content/Details' column too. The body content is the meat and potatoes of your blog. You should be solving customers? and prospects? problems, earning their trust and becoming your industry?s leader by demonstration.

Here, you?ll want to include a quick synopsis of each article to create a backlog of posts and ensure that your new content is fresh and unique. In addition, it?s also important to double check that your title accurately reflects the content of the article. After all, your blog title doesn?t just live in a silo on your website. The title of your blog post will also show up as a result in search. And oftentimes, when your post is shared via social media, it will look similar to the following, just the blog title and its link:

?

?

Sure -- your article may have a lot more context on your blog, but that context can easily get lost once it's shared externally. Think of how your stand-alone title would appear in a Facebook post or among a litany of other tweets in a user's Twitter feed. Does the title clearly reflect the content that's inside? Failing to align your article's title with its content is a sure-fire way to lose trust in your readers ... and ensure they never come back to your blog for more.

Keywords and Target Personas

Keyword personaYour company has a mission, right? And if you're blogging, that mission likely includes providing expertise in certain areas that can be explained in a few keyword or key phrases that people use to search. Well, it turns out blogging plays a HUGE role in improving your company's search rank. Okay, okay -- no surprise there. But you'd be surprised how easy it is to overlook SEO when your main focus is content creation.

Make sure you're not only consciously integrating the keywords your company is trying to rank for into your blog posts, but that you're also listing them in your editorial calendar. Consistent use of these terms is one way Google will rank you, so make sure your keyword strategy is baked into your blog and tracked here. It will also keep you focused on blogging about the topics that you want to get found for, which should also help you cater to your ...

... target readers! Visualize the people reading your blog as people you want to buy your products or services. Considering that vision, wouldn?t you want to tailor your content to something they?ll want to read and learn from? If you're still a bit hazy on who your buyer personas are, check out this post, which is everything you need to research and create detailed buyer personas -- with its own template and all! Then, fill in this this column before you publish anything. If you can?t identify the specific target persona for a particular post, is it really worth writing?

It makes the most sense to use these two sections in tandem. Put yourself in the shoes of that target reader, and think about which keywords he or she may be searching to find you. Use those keywords as the starting point for topic ideas. Then, analyze the performance of those articles in terms of metrics like views, social shares, leads generated, as well as feedback from comments. This is a great way to determine which topics resonate best with your various buyer personas, which should help to inform your future blog topic ideas.

Offer/Call-to-Action

offer2Speaking of leads, you want to generate leads from your blog too, right? That's why every blog post you publish should include a call-to-action (CTA) for an additional lead-generating offer that visitors must fill out a form to obtain. This provides you with their contact information (which enables you to nurture them later) and thus helps push readers closer and closer toward becoming customers. This is where the lead gen aspect of your blog really shines. To learn more about proper CTA selection, check out this blog post.

On the flip side, if you have a great new marketing offer you want to promote, this is another strong starting point to brainstorm your next blog post. Can you write a blog post on a similar or related topic that enables you to incorporate a call-to-action for your desired offer? Consider how you can use your blog to promote your amazing offers, and come up with article topics from there. Use this column in your template to keep track of which offers you're promoting in each post. This can also come in handy for making sure you're not mistakenly using the same CTAs over and over ... and over ... again -- particularly if you have a lot of high-performing offers to choose from.

Now that you?ve got a sense of what this template can help you accomplish, give it a try! Depending on how much content you publish (or want to publish) and how far in advance you want to do your planning, you can customize and build out this template to cover a month's worth -- or even a whole year's worth -- of blog content. But you've got to download it first ;-)

Chinese toad in candlestick comes to South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? It's a real life Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

Animal rescue officials in South Africa say they found a toad from China hidden inside a porcelain candlestick.

The Star newspaper of South Africa quoted animal expert Brett Glasby in Cape Town saying that workers had to break the candlestick to get the toad out. He said the toad, an Asian Common Toad, can slow its breathing and heart rate to survive times of drought, likely aiding it to survive the voyage.

Workers fed the hungry toad worms and crickets after freeing it.

The animal is not endangered. But because the toad is a possible invasive species for South Africa, workers will have to put the animal down.

More funerals, White House meeting follow school attack

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Even as they buried more victims of the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history on Thursday, residents of Newtown, Connecticut, sought ways to pressure U.S. leaders to restrict access to guns and a White House task force on violence met.

Funerals were scheduled for a half-dozen people, some as young as 6 years old, who were shot and killed on Friday by a heavily armed 20-year-old man who attacked an elementary school with an assault rifle.

Hundreds of mourners packed into a Thursday morning funeral for Benjamin Wheeler, 6, filing into the gray stone Trinity Episcopal Church past two rows of Boy Scouts who lined up outside as a flag-bearing honor guard.

The December 14 rampage in which 28 people were killed, including 20 children and the gunman, has sparked new discussion on tightening gun laws, a thorny political issue in the United States, which has a strong culture of individual gun ownership.

Vice President Joe Biden convened the first meeting of a new White House task force charged by President Barack Obama with drawing up a plan to tackle gun violence in the United States.

"You know better than anyone what is needed out there," he told the group, which included Attorney General Eric Holder, other cabinet members and police officials from around the country. "The president is absolutely committed to keeping the promise that he will act."

As a senator, Biden authored a crime bill in 1994 that included a temporary ban on assault weapons.

After the meeting, Holder was scheduled to travel to Newtown to meet privately with law enforcement officials investigating the massacre.

WAITING ON THE NRA

The National Rifle Association, the powerful firearms lobby that has long resisted any effort to restrict gun ownership, signaled this week it may be ready to bend. It said it would offer "meaningful contributions" to prevent future such massacres at an event in Washington on Friday.

The group, which kept silent for five days after the shooting, plans to continue its media push over the weekend with its chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, due to appear on the television talk show "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, formerly Obama's chief of staff, worried publicly that the NRA would not break its past patterns.

"I fully expect the NRA to do exactly what they always do," Emanuel said at a press conference at Chicago City Hall, where he called for a ban on assault weapons of the kind used in the Newtown killings.

"I expect the Washington gun lobby and the gun lobbies around to do exactly what they always do, which is to try to apply political pressure so you ignore the overwhelming public opinion."

In Newtown, a few dozen residents met at the town library on Wednesday night to discuss ways they could influence the national debate. Senator Richard Blumenthal told the group it was time for a "seismic change" in gun policies.

"This horrific tragedy has changed America, in the way that it is ready to stop the spread of gun violence," he said.

The shooter, Adam Lanza, used guns that were legally purchased and registered to his mother Nancy, his first victim in Friday's attack.

A funeral home outside Connecticut plans to claim her body, The New Haven Register reported, citing Connecticut's chief medical examiner, Dr. H. Wayne Carver II.

Democrats in Congress who favor gun control have called for quick votes on measures to ban assault weapons or high-capacity magazines, hoping that the slaying of the 6- and 7-year olds in Newtown might be a tipping point to win over more lawmakers.

The backlash against guns has not been limited to lawmakers. Retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc took down an website about Bushmaster rifles, the sort used in the attack. Dick's Sporting Goods pulled all guns from its store closest to the massacre in Newtown, about 80 miles northeast of New York City.

Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP this week said it would sell the Freedom Group, the largest U.S. manufacturer of firearms, which produced the Bushmaster AR-15-type rifle used in the attack.

Newtown schools - with the exception of Sandy Hook Elementary, the site of the shooting - re-opened to students on Tuesday. On Thursday, school officials said Friday, the last day before the Christmas break, would be a shortened day, rather than a full-length day as originally scheduled.

The town's post office has been overwhelmed with thousands of letters and packages sent by well-wishers.

"We have a lot of experience in the delivery of love," Christine Dugas, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service, said on CNN.

Medical team arrives in Iraq to treat Talabani

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Foreign medical experts began arriving in Baghdad on Wednesday to assist Iraqi doctors treating ailing President Jalal Talabani, who remains in a Baghdad intensive care unit after suffering a stroke.

Talabani, a member of Iraq's Kurdish minority, was rushed to the hospital late Monday and doctors worked to stabilize him into the following day. His illness raises new concerns about Iraq's stability, which is being tested anew by a recent spike in tensions between the central government and the Kurds.

Talabani's doctors have not formally said that the 79-year-old statesman suffered a stroke, though several other government officials have confirmed that is the case.

Deputy Health Minister Issam Namiq said medical teams from Iran and Germany had arrived to assist with the treatment, and that additional experts from Britain are on their way.

He told reporters the president is getting better, though he offered no details about the severity of the illness.

"His condition is stable. And I underline here that there is an improvement in his condition compared with yesterday," he said.

Neighboring Turkey has offered to send an air ambulance to fly the president to a hospital abroad.

Kurdish parliament member Mahmoud Othman also described Talabani's condition as improving, saying in a phone interview that he is "in a better situation than yesterday."

Doctors are still considering whether to send Talabani abroad for treatment, and no decision has been made, Namiq said.

Talabani's official powers are limited, but he is seen as a rare unifying figure seen as able to rise above the ethnic and sectarian rifts that still divide the country.

Before he fell ill, he was actively involved in trying to mediate an ongoing crisis between Baghdad and the Kurds, who have their own fighters and considerable autonomy in their enclave in northern Iraq.

The two sides last month moved additional troops into disputed areas along the Kurds' self-rule northern region, prompting fears that fighting could break out.

Talabani last week brokered a deal that calls on both sides to eventually withdraw troops from the contested areas, though there is no timetable for how soon the drawdown might take place.

Debugging the new WeightWatchers Mobile Site on IE10 for Windows Phone 8

It?s been a while since I?ve done a debugging post, and I thought it was about time I came back and did one again.

As some of you may have figured out, I travel now and then. (I am at just over 195,000 BIS ? butt in seat - miles so far in 2012.) And, if you travel as well, you know how damaging this can be to your waistline. So, I decided to nip this little gain in the bud and join WeightWatchers. Now, shortly after I joined, they updated their mobile website, and warned that ?Windows Mobile? (apparently they didn?t get the re-branding memo) might not work.

That?s a challenge if I ever heard one.

So, I went to the site, and sure enough, it really didn?t work. I just saw this:

wwmobileblank

So, they were right. But ? there really is no reason why we shouldn?t run an HTML app with our latest and greatest IE10 browser unless they took a hard dependency on some unstable spec which we hadn?t implemented yet.

So, first stop ? the developer tools. This one turned out to be pretty easy, as the console went ahead and spat this out:

HTML1200: weightwatchers.com is on the Internet Explorer Compatibility View List ('C:\Users\cjacks\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IECompatData\iecompatdata.xml').
m.weightwatchers.com

Aha! Another example of developers not wrapping their heads around the confusing world of Internet Explorer?s compatibility infrastructure and our rabid desire to keep all of your sites working. Only this time, it appears we actually broke the site with the compatibility view list!

To find out, I switched out the document mode using the F12 developer tools, and voila:

wwmobilefixed

So, what can they do to get around this, rather than having to tell all of their Windows Phone customers to just use the junky old site (and then pay to continue maintaining it)?

First, they could immediately fix their site by adding X-UA-Compatible to the headers, and overrule our compat view setting for this part of the site.

Second, they could make sure that everything works, and then get themselves removed from the compat view list by sending mail to iepo at microsoft.com.

But this illustrates the conundrum we face in app compat. By keeping old sites working, we inadvertently broke a new site, and unaware of the compatibility infrastructure that was hindering rather than helping them, they just threw up their arms and decided to keep the old site around. Compatibility adds complexity and confusion, but when it works it makes customers very happy.
