Climate change winners: Ad?lie penguin population expands as ice fields recede

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Ad?lie penguins may actually benefit from warmer global temperatures, the opposite of other polar species, according to a breakthrough study by an international team led by University of Minnesota Polar Geospatial Center researchers. The study provides key information affirming hypothetical projections about the continuing impact of environmental change.

Researchers from the United States and New Zealand used a mix of old and new technology studying a combination of aerial photography beginning in 1958 and modern satellite imagery from the 2000s. They found that the population size of an Ad?lie penguin colony on Antarctica's Beaufort Island near the southern Ross Sea increased 84 percent (from 35,000 breeding pairs to 64,000 breeding pairs) as the ice fields retreated between 1958-2010, with the biggest change in the last three decades. The average summer temperature in that area increased about a half a degree Celsius per decade since the mid-1980s.

The first-of-its-kind study was published today in PLOS ONE, a leading peer-reviewed scientific journal. The research affirms models published in 2010 projecting how south polar penguins will respond to changed habitat as Earth's atmosphere reaches 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, a point that is rapidly approaching.

The study showed that available habitat for Ad?lie penguins on the main portion of the Beaufort colony, on the south coast, increased 71 percent since 1958, with a 20 percent increase from 1983-2010. The extent of the snow and ice field to the north of the main colony did not change from 1958-1983, but then retreated 543 meters from 1983-2010.

In addition to the overall population growth, researchers saw an increase in population density within the colony as it filled in what used to be unsuitable habitat covered in snow and ice. They also found that the emigration rates of birds banded as chicks on Beaufort Island to colonies on nearby Ross Island decreased after 2005 as available habitat on Beaufort increased, leading to altered dynamics of the population studied.

"This research raises new questions about how Antarctic species are impacted by a changing environment," said Michelle LaRue, the paper's co-author and research fellow at the Polar Geospatial Center in the University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering. "This paper encourages all of us to take a second look at what we're seeing and find out if this type of habitat expansion is happening elsewhere to other populations of Ad?lie penguins or other species."

Penguin expert and study co-author David Ainley, a lead author of an earlier study, agreed that this study gives researchers important new information.

"We learned in previous research from 2001-2005 that it is a myth that penguins never move to a new colony in large numbers. When conditions are tough, they do," said Ainley, a senior marine wildlife ecologist with H.T. Harvey and Associates, an environmental consulting company in California. "This study at Beaufort and Ross Islands provides empirical evidence about how this penguin attribute will contribute to their response to climate change."

Ad?lie penguins are common along the southern Antarctic coast. They are smaller than their Emperor penguin counterparts standing about 46 to 75 cm (18 to 30 inches) when upright and weighing about 4.5-5.4 kg (10-12 pounds). The Ad?lie penguin lives only where there is sea ice but needs the ice-free land to breed. Breeding pairs produce on average one chick per year and return to the same area to breed if conditions haven't changed.

To determine changes in available nesting habitat in this study, researchers gathered aerial photos during the penguin incubation period in 1958, 1983 and 1993 and high-resolution satellite images from 2005 and 2010. Researchers overlaid the images exactly, lining up rocks and other geographical landmarks. They studied guano (penguin feces and urine) stains to determine the available habitat.

In the future, researchers plan to use additional satellite imagery to look at other Ad?lie penguin populations to help understand the dynamics and environmental factors that influence regional populations.

"This study brought together researchers from different academic disciplines who all contributed their expertise," LaRue said. "We had people who study climate change, spatial analysis, and wildlife population dynamics. This is how good science leads to results."

In addition to LaRue and Ainley, other researchers involved in the study included Matt Swanson, a graduate student researcher at the University of Minnesota Polar Geospatial Center; Katie M. Dugger from Oregon State University; Phil O'B. Lyver from Landcare Research in New Zealand; Kerry Barton from Bartonk Solutions in New Zealand; and Grant Ballard from PRBO Conservation Science in California.

The study was primarily funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Hillary Clinton fans fine with 2016 run

Hillary Rodham Clinton stayed on safe political ground Tuesday, advocating women's rights globally in a 12-minute speech, but that was enough to excite fans imploring the former first lady, senator and secretary of state to run again for president three years from now.

Clinton, perhaps as popular as ever in her 22 years in national politics, said she has "unwavering faith in the untapped potential of women and girls." She spoke at the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards, at Washington's Kennedy Center. The event, highlighting efforts such as expanding education for girls and fighting domestic violence worldwide, marked her first public speech since ending her much-praised stint as secretary of state.

As members of the group Ready for Hillary cheered outside, the 2016 political buzz was inevitable. Vice President Joe Biden ? another potential Democratic candidate ? spoke later at the same event.

If Clinton has any jealousy, she didn't show it. She praised Biden effusively, especially for his role in Congress' recent renewal of the Violence Against Women Act.

Biden returned the compliment a half-hour later, after Clinton had left the stage, telling the mostly female audience of more than 2,000 that "there's no woman like Hillary Clinton."

Biden said Clinton's declaration in China nearly two decades ago ? "Women's rights are human rights," she said at the time ? "still echoes forcefully around the world." Women everywhere, he said, "are entitled to every single opportunity that any man is."

Clinton, 65, has said she has no plans for a second presidential bid, but she hasn't ruled it out. Democrats argue among themselves whether she has the desire and energy to go through the grueling campaign process she knows so well. But many see her as a prohibitive favorite whose head start would be so big that other potential candidates might starve for funds and attention.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll in January found that 67 percent of Americans held a favorable view of Clinton. That's her highest rating since the poll began measuring her popularity in the 1990s. It spans her eight years in the Senate.

"It's hard to overstate the breadth and depth of enthusiasm for a Hillary run," said Doug Hattaway, a former Clinton campaign aide and now a Washington-based consultant. She built a national base of supporters in 2008, when she lost a hard-fought nomination fight to Barack Obama, and she's widely respected after her turn heading the State Department, Hattaway said.

"A lot of donors, volunteers and potential campaign workers will wait to hear what she decides before committing to other candidates," he said, although "anyone with their eye on 2016 is already working on it."

Mo Elleithee, a top spokesman for Clinton's 2008 campaign, said it's much too early to press her for an answer.

"My advice to everyone is to chill out," Elleithee said. "There's no need for all this breathless anticipation at this point," he said, and political activists should focus on next year's mid-term elections.

Noting that Clinton said she has no intention of running, he said, "I think that's where her head is." But he said he shares "the enthusiasm" for a Clinton candidacy.

There may be no one in America with a clearer view of what it takes to run for president.

Clinton was a highly visible adviser and defender of her husband, Bill, then the Arkansas governor, when he was elected president in 1992 in 1996. Her eight years as first lady included the excruciating Monica Lewinsky scandal and her husband's impeachment.

On the same day her husband's successor was elected, Clinton handily won a Senate seat from New York. She breezed to re-election in 2006 and was the early favorite for the 2008 presidential nomination.

But Obama used his early opposition to the Iraq war, plus a keen understanding of how to win small states' delegates, to outmaneuver the Clinton team. Obama promptly tapped his former rival to be secretary of state, assuring Clinton another prime post at the center of national policy and politics.

Some Democrats want the party to look to younger candidates, noting that Clinton will turn 69 shortly before Election Day 2016, and Biden will turn 74 soon after. Those drawing notice include New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, 55, and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, 50.

As runner-up in the 2008 Democratic primary, Clinton arguably is the party's heir apparent. Republicans, not Democrats, typically nominate the next-in-line contender.

With the early GOP presidential picture wildly scrambled, it's possible that Republicans will tap a newer, younger nominee while Democrats consider one of the nation's best-known figures, and certainly the most high-profile female politician.

Clinton is scheduled to speak Friday at the Women in the World Summit in New York.

keeping kids busy in a small home | American Family Now

A common question about living in a small home is, how do you live in peace with each other? I guess when you are forced to be near your spouse and kids you are more likely to be at odds? Seeing as how everyone I talk to says that even in a big house you still have to learn to be at peace with each other, I?m thinking that living in a small home doesn?t change relationships. If you love each other you find more opportunities to spend time together, likewise, if you fight all the time you?ll find more opportunities to fight, but living in a small space doesn?t make you fight!

SONY DSC

Adapting to a small home requires a change in perception about a number of activities though, and entertaining your kids is one of them. How do I stay sane with four kids in a roughly 200sq ft house? I began to answer this type of question in my post answering your questions, but I had intended to make a whole post out of it, so we?ll go into more depth here.

Being a stay-at-home-mom of four children between the ages of 1 and 6 is not easy, but I will not pretend that having a bigger home would make it any easier. They are full of energy, ideas, and conversation, and no matter what your home looks like they need attention, all the time. But I knew that going into this whole motherhood thing, so I?m not complaining. Being a stay-at-home-mom is hard work, but I wouldn?t trade it for the world. My kids mean so much to me, and I pray God helps me to do the best I can to raise them to be healthy, independent, godly individuals. That?s the longterm goal, but as we mothers all know, life is lived moment to moment. My focus for this post is, how do our kids spend their time on an average day, and how do I enjoy them, while living in a small home?

SONY DSC

Invest in Lego! Haha. Seriously though, planning out and selectively choosing entertainment (with or without your kids depending on their ages) makes a big difference in how each day goes. We have a lot of toys available to us in accessible storage, but there are certain activities our kids enjoy the most, or spend the most time doing. I prioritize those favorite activities by making them more accessible to the kids, and by making sure they have time to spend on them. When kids stay busy doing creative, mind-consuming activities, they are working their busy brains, spending time (usually) peacefully together, and sometimes I even have a few minutes to spend with one child alone or to do an activity by myself (those dishes don?t do themselves!).

SONY DSC

(Four-year-old Girlie is working on number recognition while wearing an eye patch for lazy eye treatment)

Lego is a great example, but every family has there own favorite. I have found that if you plan space accordingly, you can make room in a small home for most any activity. Puzzles, board games, books, crafts, dress-up supplies, even musical instruments (which Papa has!). Creative storage of totes, use of cupboards, shelves, and closets, will ensure that your favorite activities are made priority in your small home. We have a set of shelves and drawers in our living area, totes in one small child?s bed and under the dining room table, a larger tote on the porch, and additional games, books, and toys in our storage camper which aren?t used as often.

Don?t forget the outdoors! When you have a small home, the outdoors becomes a priceless environment. Health professionals say children should get at least 60 minutes of free time outdoors. On most winter days our kids spend 30-60 minutes outdoors, and in the summer we count how many hours they spend indoors instead, which is far less. We are lucky enough to have an environment which is relatively safe for kids to play in unattended for a few minutes. I try to make it a rule for my 4 and 3 year olds that they can?t go out by themselves, they have to be together or with their 6 year old brother. Even if they get into trouble, it is easier to tell when two are yelling at each other than when one is alone!

SONY DSC

(painting in pajamas ? what better way to spend a Saturday morning?)

Sending the kids outside is good for their physical and mental health and growth, so it is a priority to us, just like finding good quality entertainment indoors. But what about TV? First of all, if you haven?t figured it out yet, we do have a TV and local channels, as well as a DVD player in our bedroom. With our new electrical system we can use them anytime we want. I have heard that most kids watch a few hours of TV, plus time playing video games every day. Papa and I give our kids one and a half hours of screen time each day. Like discussing food, I feel somewhat vulnerable telling you how much they watch. Some of you probably think that is way too much, perhaps others feel guilty that theirs watch more. That is not my intention. Nevertheless, our kids watch one movie or three half hour PBS shows each day, Monday through Friday, except some Wednesdays when we are more busy and don?t have time for it. When they watch TV I am almost always washing dishes and making phone calls since it?s quiet.

SONY DSC

What about the family time that comes with living in a small space? I should hope that ours isn?t any different than a family living in an average sized home. As a stay-at-home-mom, I spend significantly more time with our kids than Papa does, but we both make it a priority to spend our days together as much as possible. On occasion the kids will spend a night or a few hours away from home with someone in the family, but most of the time we do things as a unit. On an average day that means reading together, family worship, games, chores, crafts, and of course tickling and cuddling! Usually we do arrends together once a week (laundromat, post office, library, bank, etc.), and on the weekends we often spend more time outdoors than during the week. Much of this together time is not scheduled, but fits in between other activities naturally.

And then there is homeschooling. How much time do we invest? Where do we do it? Where do we keep our books? In this post, I talked quite a bit about the where?s and how?s of our homeschool, which we spend roughly 5-10 hours a week doing together. This week we had to make a minor change in where we keep our homeschool books though. Previously we kept them on a book shelf in the living room. Turns out that?s a very attractive place for a one year old to pull books from. Because Chickie is not responding to discipline (another spirited child?) and I would rather not spend my days putting them all back on the shelf again and again, I cleared out a spot on a shelf in my room for them, putting my less frequently read books in the storage camper until summer at least. That way our homeschool things are still nearby, but not easy to reach by little fingers.

SONY DSC

And what about the baby? Twelve-month-old Chickie finds plenty to do. She is still in the exploration stage, where most toys don?t entertain her for very long because her attention gets drawn to the many people and activities going on around her. We keep age-appropriate toys readily available, but she really enjoys playing with her big sibs, and exploring any drawers or cupboards or boxes I let her get into. Right now she still takes one, sometimes two naps a day, for about one hour each, which is often when the older kids get projects out that they don?t want her exploring. I also spend time nursing and cuddling her, or carrying her around while I cook, play, or teach. When I need two hands and someone is working on an important project that she can?t get into, Chickie enjoys sitting in her homemade highchair with a stimulating activity, like a cup and spoon to stir with or play drums! (And speaking of Chickie, this post happens to not have any pictures of her, but Friday?s post will have plenty of cute ones!)

SONY DSC

(playing with Papa?s electronic tools and materials)

To sum up, here?s how our kids spend their days:

  • ?? ?Easy access to stimulating, creative activities
  • ?? ?As much outdoor time as they want during mostly good weather (above 20 degrees Fahrenheit and mostly dry)
  • ?? ?Up to one and a half hours of screen time a day, usually ?educational?
  • ?? ?One to two hours of planned educational activities, four days a week, September through May
  • ?? ?Entertaining baby sister
  • ?? ?Lots of together time in between

SONY DSC

And all of this, while living in a 200sq ft home with a family of six. If you live in a small home, please share your experience ? how does your family spend an average day?

An inside look at carnivorous plants

Apr. 2, 2013 ? When we imagine drama playing out between predators and prey, most of us picture stealthy lions and restless gazelle, or a sharp-taloned hawk latched on to an unlucky squirrel. But Ben Baiser, a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard Forest and lead author of a new study in Oikos, thinks on a more local scale. His inter-species drama plays out in the humble bogs and fens of eastern North America, home to the carnivorous pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea. "It's shocking, the complex world you can find inside one little pitcher plant," says Baiser.

A pitcher plant's work seems simple: their tube-shaped leaves catch and hold rainwater, which drowns the ants, beetles, and flies that stumble in.

But the rainwater inside a pitcher plant is not just a malevolent dunking pool. It also hosts a complex system of aquatic life, including wriggling mosquito, flesh fly, and midge larvae; mites; rotifers; copepods; nematodes; and multicellular algae. These tiny organisms are crucial to the pitcher plant's ability to process food. They create what scientists call a 'processing chain': when a bug drowns in the pitcher's rainwater, midge larvae swim up and shred it to smaller pieces, bacteria eat the shredded pieces, rotifers eat the bacteria, and the pitcher plant absorbs the rotifers' waste.

But that's not the whole story. Fly larvae are also eating the rotifers, midge larvae, and each other, and everybody eats bacteria. It's a complex food web that shifts on the order of seconds.

Aaron Ellison, a co-author on the new study and senior ecologist at the Harvard Forest, says the pitcher plant food web is an ideal model for understanding larger food webs -- with top predators like wolves -- that change over a longer period of time. He points out, "With pitcher plants, you can hold the whole food web in your hand. The vast number of pitcher plants in one bog provide endless opportunities for detailed experiments on how food webs work, not only in pitcher plants, but also in bigger ecosystems that are harder to manipulate, like ponds, lakes, or oceans."

With funding from the National Science Foundation, the research team traveled to bogs in British Columbia, Quebec City, and Georgia -- the full extent of the plant's range -- to analyze the aquatic food webs from 60 pitcher plants. They found 35 different types of organisms inside, with a large contingent of bacteria counting as just one type. Then, says Baiser, "We wanted to know: how did we get different food webs in individual pitchers from the same species pool? What caused these food webs to form the way they did?"

A few well-established scientific models predict how food webs form based on a ranked system of ecosystem factors. For the Oikos study, Baiser and his team checked their real-world observations against those models. He explains: "Say you've got a bunch of lakes. And you've got a big bucket holding all the species that can live in those lakes. When you dump out the bucket, which creatures end up in which lake? What matters more: the size of the lake, or the fact that predator species X is there, too? Or is it random? Those models help us tease those factors apart."

According to the Oikos study, the way pitcher plant food webs assemble is not random. In fact, it seems the predator-prey interactions are of key importance. "You take out one species, and that affects everything else," says Baiser.

Texas prosecutor steps into job after predecessor gunned down

By Chris Francescani

KAUFMAN, Texas (Reuters) - Brandi Fernandez slipped into the Kaufman County Courthouse in her first full day as interim district attorney on Tuesday, taking over a job that authorities believe got her predecessor and one of her colleagues killed.

Praised as a smart, tough litigator and a fierce advocate for child victims of crime, Fernandez declined to address reporters and remained under close protection inside the courthouse throughout the day. A police cruiser was parked outside her single-family home surrounded by trees on Monday and Tuesday.

Atop her agenda was investigating the targeted killings of former District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife on Saturday and Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse on January 31.

As first assistant district attorney under McLelland, Fernandez, 42, was named to the interim job on Monday, after having worked in the office for nearly a decade.

Just before stepping into the job, Fernandez exuded calm, a colleague said.

"She's not the kind to appear rattled or look that way even if she is," said attorney Scott Gray, 35, a former Sherman County prosecutor whose wife was once Fernandez's trial partner. "She's very calm and collected. Don't think I've ever heard her raise her voice or seem disheveled."

Authorities believe the McLellands' killer intended to send a message. Mike and Cynthia McLelland each suffered multiple gunshot wounds at their home, and sheriff's deputies found cartridge casings next to their bodies, according to an affidavit reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday.

The McLelland killings came just two months after McLelland vowed to capture the killer of Hasse, who was shot dead near the town square.

The twin homicides have rocked mostly rural Kaufman County on the eastern outskirts of Dallas, and several law enforcement officials have called them a direct attack on the criminal justice system.

ARYAN BROTHERHOOD SPECULATION

Authorities have yet to identify any suspects while people in Kaufman speculate it was the work of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, a white supremacist prison gang that had been the target of 34 indictments stemming from a task force that included Kaufman County prosecutors.

The racketeering charges accused the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas of exerting control over prison populations and neighborhoods through intimidation and violence and involvement in three murders, multiple attempted murders, kidnappings, assaults, and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine.

A Houston-based federal prosecutor was withdrawing from his role in the multiagency task force that brought the racketeering case against the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of Texas said on Tuesday.

The spokeswoman would not elaborate on Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Hileman's reasoning for withdrawing, saying only that the U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of Texas would continue to prosecute the case.

CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN

Fernandez, who received her law degree from Texas Tech University in 1996, will hold the interim job 21 days unless Republican Governor Rick Perry appoints a replacement to fill out the rest of McLelland's term before then.

It was unknown whether Fernandez, who registered as a Republican in Kaufman County in 2005, was under consideration for the more formal appointment that would last until coming up for election in 2014.

"If you're a victim of a criminal act, and it involves a child, the last person you want to talk to is Ms. Fernandez. She's a real strong opponent of crimes against children," Gray said.

"She's tried murder cases, drug cases, pretty much anything you can think of, but what's near and dear to her heart is prosecuting crimes against children," Gray said.

Criminal defense attorney Eric Smenner, who has known Fernandez eight years and defended cases she prosecuted, said she was always well-prepared at trial.

"I've tried a lot of cases in 16 years and of all the prosecutors in Kaufman she is among the top, an excellent prosecutor," Smenner said.

Bobby Aga, 68, an insurance agent and longtime Kaufman resident who observed Fernandez while serving on a grand jury, called her sharp and insightful. "She really knows how to get to the core of a thing."
